Overview

Things aren't always as they seem...

I've lived by that motto for most of my life. I've hid who I am, who I used to be, and what I've done from anyone who dares to get close to me. At nineteen I lost my parents. I thought nothing in the world could be more painful. I was wrong.

When I met Leo, my world seemed brighter. I felt hope for the first time in months. He promised me a life of luxury, but things aren't always as they seem. Leo had a dark side, one that he hid from me. He pulled me under and held me captive, making death seem like the only way out.

It took me two years to escape. I ran never looking back until now. My life is finally coming together. I have people I trust, a job, and a safe place to call home, but things aren't always as they seem.

One night, one phone call, one moment causes it to all crash down. Leo has my sister, and he wants to trade her for me. The one person I can trust is the only one who could also tear me apart... Detective Jeff Horn. He's got secrets just like me, and seems to understand me better than I do myself.

How do I tell him my darkest secrets? How do I go back to a place that nearly broke me? How do I let him see Below the Surface?

This book contains violence and graphic sexual encounters. It is intended for adult readers.

Below the Surface is one heck of a captivating read. It is full of lust, sex appeal, drama, trauma and the thrill of the chase. How do you live your life after escaping one of the most abusive sex trafficking rings? How do you go on? If you ask Lena ... you just do. Even though she definitely has many post traumatic symptoms that she has to deal with, she is determined to not let it define her. Until someone shows an interest in her. That someone would be no other than Detective Jeff Horn. Hot, sexy, protective and understanding. There is just something about Lena that draws him toward her. Being a detective, he knows how to read people. Jeff knew that something was off kilter and he knew when to step away and give her space. That space was no longer an option when Lena received a phone call from her ex-captor that changed her life as it stood. This brought Jeff and Lena closer, and closer is exactly what they needed to not only save someone very important to her, but for their "relationship" as well. What we didn't know is that Jeff had secrets of his own. Can he trust her with these secrets when she is so fragile? Will they be able to come together, through the turmoil? The work that the two do together is amazing. They worked almost flawlessly side-by-side. Having been in this situation before, Lena knew exactly how to behave and Jeff trusted her to make it believable. The last thing that he wanted, was for her to be harmed, therefore he was her protector, while trying to save someone oh so important to her. Can they make it out of the dangerous situation that they are in? Does Lena trust Jeff enough to survive this hell? I love Heather's writing. She is one of my favorite authors when it comes to suspense. She can lure you, slowly reel you in and keep you hooked. If you are new to her, I would make Below the Surface your first, since it is a standalone. Once you pick it up, you will not want to put it down. Give her a shot, you won't be disappointed!

Below the Surface by Heather D'Agostino is the fifth book in her Witness series. This book is part of a series but CAN be read as a standalone. It is an emotional and gripping read that covers human trafficking, captivity, and abuse. It is very well-written and well-paced and, for me, was un-put-down-able. Lena has escaped the anguish of her past and is distancing herself from that anguish as much as possible, until her sister is taken by the same people that once held her. Jeff is the detective investigating the local human trafficking ring who soon realizes that the beautiful barmaid is possibly the key to shutting down the whole organization. Enjoy!
