Imagine, if you will, the vampire legend explained in a totally unique, entirely different way. Now imagine, the vampire legend explained, using the creation story from the book of “Genesis” of the bible… Aeryn Douglas is an extremely creative and talented young writer whose name I expect to see on bestseller lists in the very near future. She paints scenes that flow and move and breathe with a life all their own. Reading this novel is to experience a surreal dream the reader won’t want to wake from. Or put down. “A sense of duty crept over my body; beneath its weight I sank to my knees. It was for these people that I existed. My people—the vampire—had evolved from simple dwellers of the night so that we could protect the human race. When Benajah had walked into the light, our fate had been sealed. I had been born into this long line of vampires. I had trained for this, given up everything human, every memory. I’d lost my humanity so that they could keep theirs. That is what it meant to be vampire.” “Benajah’s Keeper” is an amazing ride through a unique vampire world, one which contains elements of action, romance and suspense, in a legendary world setting unlike any other. This novel leaves “Twilight” popping bubble gum in the halls, while it kicks butt and takes names. If you want a REAL adult vampire novel with all the trimmings, this is it. I have only one issue with this book; it left me wanting. I want the second book, and I want it right now.
I read this for book club. It had a well developed plot, great characters, and quite a few surprises for the vampires. I did notice a number of annoying editing errors. Certainly seems there will be a sequel. I look forward to it and would recommend this to anyone who likes vampire stories.
