It seems that every vampire novelization changes the rules of vampirism just a bit to fit their purposes. This series is no different, but here it seems to work. Police officer Sean Canady has to solve the murders of several New Orleans prostitutes that are eerily similar to the killings of Jack the Ripper. Clues lead straight to Maggie Montgomery whose family has been entwined with Sean¿s for generations. Is Maggie a murderess or is she being set up? Or is she maybe something else all together? The first book in Drake¿s vampire series has a decent plot, and wonderful descriptions of the city of New Orleans, but some mildly irritating main characters. Also a little too much historical information is imparted to characters (and, thereby, the reader) as dialogue, which seems awkward. Although the vampire thing seems a little cliché at this point, it¿s still an entertaining novel and one I would recommend to romance readers as well as vampire enthusiasts.

Compared to other vampire romances I felt the story was slow to develop, and I felt my mind wandering and put it down halfway through.

This was good for a little while, but it quickly turned into one of those 'let¿s throw everything plus the kitchen sink in here' stories. I was good with it when it was just murdering vampires tied into a hot and heavy love story, but then we have tie-ins to Jack the Ripper and the Civil War and by the time we got to the reincarnation I was done with it. I actually gave it up about 75% of the way through, pretty much unheard of with me. And have I mentioned that these vampires follow almost NONE of the rules that vampires normally follow? Not even with variations. This led to them being pretty much untouchable, and I think that what makes vampire books work is that humans have some way of being safe from them. It¿s no good if the monster doesn¿t have a fatal flaw. So to sum it up, I was disappointed.

The first of Shannon Drake's vampire books, it takes place in New Orleans of the present and the past. There are good vampires hunting the bad vampires and lots of romance. This was the first vampire romance that I ever read and I have to say that it is one of the best. I am not so much a romance reader as a mystery and paranormal reader, so maybe that is why this book had so much appeal. I have read it several times.

I read this when it came out, so it's been a while. But I do remember it being an excellent romantic vampire story. I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this vamp book...liked the C.S.I. feel even though it was published far before that craze caught on (in 1999). I liked the Jack the Ripper explanation, etc. And I thought the love story was good because it burgeoned from mutual respect. And it was eerie for me reading it in 2005 after the hurricane had hit New Orleans...strange.

This was the second vampire book I read by Shannon Drake, and I must say it was very disappointing. There was absolutely no romance in this book, and the way Miss Drake changed from one time period to another was very distracting.

I have to admit that I picked up the book more for its cover than the plot line. To tell the truth I wasn't that thrilled once I started reading. For me, a lover of vampire romance, I found the romantic parts to be a bit dry and the action to be more slowly paced. Even though the novel has an interesting plot line which constantly switches between past and present to tie several different stories together, the language really turned me off. This is placed in modern day New Orleans, people! A modern person does not say 'and the like' or 'come hither.' Slang is almost unheard of in this book, unless it's older slang like 'kook.' Every once in a while, especially when Maggie is trying to justify vampires to Sean, the characters lapse into a long speech mode where they talk for an entire page without taking a breath - all the while explaining things previously covered in the book. Still, Ms. Drake managed to hold my interest through to the end, even though it wasn't a real page turner. The mystery aspect of the book is well done, so if you're a horror/mystery reader, this is the book for you. Don't expect too much in the romance department, though.

The trilogy in which Beneath a Blood Red Moon is included is wonderful!!! Beneath a Blood Red Moon is the first, When Darkness Falls-the first book i read first-is the second and Deep Midnight the third. Once i read When Darkness Falls I knew i hade to read all books by Shannon Drake. I'm working on that one now. In my opinion she is the greatest author of vampire lovestories.

Beneath a Blood Red Moon takes place in New Orleans. A few bizarre, Jack-the-Ripper-type murders occur with hot homicide officer Sean Canady on the job. The evidence leads him to a dangerously good-looking woman's front door, Maggie. It starts a little slow, but quickly picks up, and boy is it worth it! I fell in love with Shannon Drake as a writer and sought out more of her titles to read. Sean Canady pursues Maggie, but for some mysterious reasons she can't committ, and the reader will guess why before the author reveals all. This is a book to curl up on a chair and read for an entire afternoon!

I loved it. It started a bit slow, but when it got going it didn't stop. With flashbacks and a slowly unraveling plot and a true love that continues throughout life.

This book has so much to offer! Not only do the readers meet 3 handsome men, but also learn a little about a captivating mystery in our world's past...hey, the Ripper could of been a vampire ;-) I have never read a Drake novel before, but Shannon, please become immortal, and write books we can enjoy long into our next lives!
