Overview

The American Civil War forever altered landscapes and lives above and below the Mason-Dixon Line. Unable to share a common destiny due to their family's staunch religious convictions, Caleb Wright, a shopkeeper's son from Indiana, and Lydia Weldishofer, the daughter of wealthy German immigrants, embrace the uncertainties of war. Caleb fights for his country and honor while Lydia throws caution and her reputation to the wind in order to serve those who fight, and to seek her heart's desires. As war rages, lives are lost, souls are tested, and family secrets born and buried.

Deep in the hills of Appalachia, Mattie Wright, lives trapped in a world not of her making. Former slave and sage, Levi, passes the mantel of the ancient Pangari prophecy upon her and she soon finds her hopeless life turned on end as it begins to intersect with those who went before. The family secrets begin to unravel and the journey begins.

I love historical fiction and with it being so prevalent this fall I had many titles to choose from. I was intrigued with the eyes on the cover on Beneath the Shadows and picked it up along with two others. Beneath the Shadows makes the others pale in comparison, the characters are so rich and fully developed you hate so see the book end. I am so glad it is the first in a series as I can't wait for the next one. Would make a great movie!! I believe this is a debut novel - I will definately watch for more by Newton/Benson

I am a civil war buff and couldn't resist trying this novel when I found out it was historical-fiction. With the intention of reading it on my flight to Boston I only opened to read the first page, and I didn't go to bed until almost 4am. It was a fantastic read, I only wish I wasn't done with it already!!

From the authors, In honor of the beginning of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, "Beneath the Shadows" will be re-released with a new cover and reviews later this year. The much anticipated sequel "Beyond the Promise" which will bring the Sultana tragedy into fiction for the first time will be available at the same time. For the avid fans of "Beneath the Shadows" we thank you for your enthusiastic support for this project and your patience on the sequel. Thank you, Lee Ann Newton and James Benson

I purchased this book for the plane after several recommendations from friends. I was sorry the plane ride didn't last longer as I had to put it down and couldn't get back to it until after meetings, later that night. I stayed up all night reading and though I looked liks something the cat dragged in the next morning - it was the worth it. It is such a compelling beautifully written story and you care about the characters with the first paragraph. Buy this one - you won't be sorry and be back for more:) Susan Schaffer - DC

I really enjoyed this book. I read it over a weekend. Had a hard time putting it down. This book has something for everyone, history, romance, suspense and time travel. My Mom who is 81 read it and loved it, too. Can't wait for the next book to come out so I can continue the adventure.
