Benjamin, a young mouse, and his good friend Bumper set out to rescue his mother, who--they soon learn--has been captured by Sir Pouncelot, a gourmet chef of a cat, who would like nothing better than to bake her with cream. Preschoolers and primary grade children will recognize themselves in the characters, but what makes it interesting to a wider audience is the author's subtle cheekiness and her breathtakingly imaginative illustrations. Coxe's felted wool animals are vividly alive. Their adventures take place in a visual world that sets the imagination spinning. Furniture, small props, rescue equipment--all manner of interesting and useful things--are created to scale from a palette of carefully collected accumulations. It's a delicious and heart-warming story-both to read and to look at (kudos to Oliver Toppin's perfect photographs of each scene). As a [perhaps unintended] aside, Coxe's assemblages will surely inspire many readers (including grownups) to search through kitchen drawers to find material for creating mini-environments for their own small toy animals. Recommended especially for 2-6 year olds, but creative older siblings will probably love it just as much.
