ea. vol: photogs. by author. unpaged. CIP. Crown. Mar. 1986. BD $3.95. PreS Each of these attractive board books tells the story of a big event in a toddler's life. Benjy Goes to a Restaurant as a special treat. He and his parents order, and then they watch the chef as he cooks. When Benjy's spaghetti is served, he tries to use his fork but finds using his fingers is easier; one photo shows him literally wearing his meal. Taryn Goes to the Dentist for the first time. Everything is explained in terms that a two year old will understand. Taryn's mother is present in nearly all the photos, and everyone is smiling and relaxed. At home, Taryn shares everything she learned with her daddy, her baby sister and her doll. Both books have stunning full-color photographs and a pleasing layout. These subjects are seldom dealt with in books for the very youngest; the photo-essay approach makes it easy for toddlers to relate to the experiences. Taryn's story in particular would be useful as an introduction to a potentially unpleasant experience. A note of caution: children not living in large cities might experience culture shock when visiting the dentist or dining out after looking at these books. They were photographed in New York City, where pediatric dentists and restaurants that encourage coloring on paper tablecloths are not uncommon.Lucy Young Clem, Evansville-Vanderburgh County Public Library, Ind.
