Part of Michael Alexander's translation of the Anglo-Saxon tale of Beowolf. In this book, the monster Grendel attacks Hrothgar's great hall of Heorot every night. Beowolf comes to the aid of Hrothgar, and does battle first with Grendel and then with his mother. The picture on the front cover is meant to show an Anglo-Saxon brooch shaped like a bird, but I don't think so. The 'wing' looks more like a leg with long claws for digging - so I think it looks more like a giant anteater!
