Meet the Author

Stan and Jan Berenstain were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia.  They didn't know each other as children, but met later at school, at the Philadelphia College of Art.  They liked each other right away, and found out that the both enjoyed the same kinds of books, plays, music and art.  During World War II, Stan was a medical assistant in the Army, and Jan worked in an airplane factory.  When the war was over, they got married and began to work together as artists and writers, primarily drawing cartoons for popular magazines.  After having their two sons Leo and Michael, the Berenstains decided to write some funny children's books that their children and other children could read and enjoy.  Their first published children's book was called The Big Honey Hunt .  It was about a family of bears, who later became known as the "Berenstain Bears".

Over 50 children's books later, Stan and Jan still plan all of their books together — both write the stories, and both write the pictures.  They live outside of Philadelphia in the country.

As I start another generation on my all time favorite Berenstain Bears I am delighted they are available in the Read to Me format. These books from my own kids never survived their childhood I wonder if my grandkids can wear out the digital books? I enjoy the fact that they can curl up with me and at 3 and 4 years old have no problem starting and 'turning the pages' of the digital books. The graphics are excellent as always, comforting in their familiarity; the story has its gentle lesson and the books are always FUN.

The story of this book lives up to Berenstain Bears expectations, however, the Read to Me portion is a bit hokey. The "music" that accompanies the reading is so loud that it almost drowns out the narrator - it also makes for a choppy listening experience.

Great book for the Halloween season. Teaching a lesson, as always, in a cute and entertaining way. These books tend to be a little wordy for a younger audience (I have a 2 year old) but overall he likes when a Berenstain Bear book comes out of the cabinet.
