About the Author

George Pinneo, a WWII army brat, grew up in NW Ohio, graduated from Case Institute of Technology with a BSChE in 1959. His technical career spans 55 years in front-end wafer fab semiconductor manufacture, diode laser and hybrid packaging and a start-up in article surveillance before we used the term "RFID". This entrepreneur loves to hear the phrase: "you can't do that!" And then to do it!
At 55, he earned a private pilot's certificate and built an all-metal 2-seat experimental homebuilt aircraft which he has spent 19 years "refining". Other hobbies include woodturning, sailing, canoeing, black powder cannon, hiking and jewelry making.
A glimpse into his notions of what constitutes "good" SF includes solid engineering principles based on hard scientific fact. First contact and non-human intelligence are prized. Although they can be entertaining, magic and fantasy have no place in hard SF: they don't "work" and are non-real. SF should teach new concepts and words in a positive, uplifting way. Bujold has shown SF can also be romantic in her "A Civil Campaign".
