Best Friends Forever by Kimberla Lawson Roby

"Roby writes with high-octane levels of emotion. She pushes her characters hard...drawing in readers to be more than bystanders." - USA Today

Things are falling apart in the Richardson household. Angry arguments between Celine and her husband, Keith, have become routine. She resents that he's working long hours and staying out all night, and he accuses her of not giving him the attention he deserves. Their marriage is at a cross-roads and Celine worries how her 10-year-old daughter, Kassie, will be affected.

But the situation turns devastating when Celine is diagnosed with breast cancer. As her relationship with Keith deteriorates, Celine worries that she'll be left to navigate the difficult process of cancer treatment alone. But comfort and support come in the form of Celine's best friend, Lauren. They've been attached at the hip since they were children and it is Lauren who's there for Celine in her darkest moments.

Now, Celine will be forced to make tough decisions-about her marriage and otherwise-and for the first time in her life, she wants to give up. Lauren vows to help by any means necessary and makes the kind of sacrifice only a best friend can. But will it be too late?

I'm a huge fan of Kimberla, but I was disappointed in this book. It was short, fairly predictable , and left many unanswered questions .

AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall: 3 Narration: 4 Story: 2.5 From the description, I was expecting a story full of a friend so much in your corner that she’d even help you hide the bodies. What I got was a bit more conflicted. Essentially this is the story of Celine – twelve years into her marriage and the words ‘rough patch’ don’t go nearly far enough. She and her husband Keith have hit that mark: one kid, careers, familiarity, perhaps even a bit of taking one another for granted – and things are going from tolerable to disturbing. Adding health concerns into a relationship only magnifies the tensions, and Keith isn’t there for the long haul. Not only is Celine affected, but their daughter, Kassie, is just ten, and all the upheaval isn’t any place for a kid to be. Fortunately, there’s Celine’s best friend Lauren to help her through. So – that’s the intention here in this story – in reality I found the characters a bit one-dimensional and flat, without any real importance to Lauren UNTIL the epilogue. You’d expect Keith to be the least favorite character in the story – but to be honest I thought they deserved one another, Celine was for the first better than half of the book very needy, whiny and not particularly nice. Kudos to the author for keeping me intrigued enough to power on through the end – for there, in the epilogue, is where the promise made early on finally comes to fruition. Narration for this story is provided by Maria Howell, and her performance did help me to continue on with the story, her voice was pleasant to listen to, and she didn’t over-emphasize the frequent whinging moments from Celine, or try to over-reach in differentiating her voice to indicate the different characters. There was a flair that she brought to the book that I would have missed in reading it, and most probably would have put the book aside before the halfway mark. Overall, if you are a fan of this author’s work – this will most probably work for you. I received an audiobook copy of the title from Hachette Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusion are my own responsibility.

This book was okay but could've been better. It didn't have much depth to it and was pretty predictable. My biggest complaint was the characters were too one-dimensional. Particularly Keith (the husband) and Lauren (the best friend) needed to have more character development. I needed to know more about them in order to be fully invested in their personality, their actions, and their motives. As it stands, it seemed Keith was just portrayed as a harsh, disengaged husband without depth of reason for his behavior. Lauren was just a doting friend whose life revolved around Celine (as if she didn't have any interests, commitments, or life of her own). Also, Celine's brother appeared as an afterthought to the story as if he was thrown in to help move the plot along. Unfortunately, the only thing he did for the plot was make it more predictable. This book has a great story line, I just wish it was more developed.

I won this book and am giving a honest review. To close friends have grown up one is married and the other is still single but is their for her friend as her husband decided to leave her because after years of always being there decided to have a career and he felt like she was ignoring him and he cheated and was leaving her. Well she finds a lump in her breast and just knows that it is cancer. She confides in her best friend but doesn't tell her about her husband leaving right away because she is hurting emotionally. Well the husband tells her to stop acting like a victim. Like breast cancer is a victim illness. She has hr daughter to worry about and between her brother and friends she gets through most of the the treatments because they caught it early but then the husband wants to come back and she doesn't feel good about. I cried through parts of this book, but I loved the strength she got from her religious beliefs and her friends and family. What a wonderful book

This was definitely an emotionally charged book. I had several emotions while reading it, which for me tells me the author wrote a good story. I will say that it was a little religious for me. However, who's to say that I wouldn't become that religious myself being put into the same situation. I felt VERY strong emotions for Celine and Keith. I won't tell you exactly what those emotions were. You will just have to read the book, but they were STRONG. The author did a great job on the story, the characters and evoking my emotions. Huge thanks to Grand Central Publishing for approving my request and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
