How well do you really know your best friend?
Kat Grant and Alice Campbell have a friendship forged in shared confidences and long lunches lubricated by expensive wine. Though they’re very different women—the artsy socialite and the struggling suburbanite—they’re each other’s rocks. But even rocks crumble under pressure. Like when Kat’s financier husband, Howard, plunges to his death from the second-floor balcony of their South Florida mansion.
Howard was a jerk, a drunk, a bully and, police say, a murder victim. The questions begin piling up. Like why Kat has suddenly gone dark: no calls, no texts and no chance her wealthy family will let Alice see her. Why investigators are looking so hard in Alice’s direction. Who stands to get hurt next. And who is the cool liar—the masterful manipulator behind it all.

Sometimes you pair the perfect book with the perfect place to read that book. Last month I was lucky enough to have a few hours to sit on a warm Florida beach and soak up the sun, so I brought along a new book to read- Margot Hunt's Best Friends Forever. Three hours later, I finally looked up and took a breath, having finished the book. (Thank goodness I used plenty of sunscreen.) Alice Campbell is making breakfast, getting her son and daughter ready for school, when two policemen ring her doorbell. They have questions for Alice about the death of her friend Kat's husband, Howard. Howard had fallen to his death from the balcony of his and Kat's mansion. Everyone assumed it was a drunken accident, until the police came knocking. They asked Alice to come down to the station to talk about Kat and Howard. Kat came from a wealthy family, and owned an art gallery on Worth Avenue, a fancy shopping district in West Palm Beach, Florida. Alice met Kat at JFK airport where she was waiting out a delayed flight to their new home in Jupiter. Kat bought Alice a martini and they bonded. They became fast friends, even though their economic circumstances weren't exactly compatible. Alice and her husband Todd disliked Howard upon first meeting him. He was obnoxious, and condescending and rude to his wife in front them. The story jumps back and forth in time, from the present, with Kat refusing to answer any of Alice's texts or phone calls, to three years before when the ladies meet and begin spending all their free time together, even taking girls' weekend vacations together on Kat's dime. Todd and Alice run into financial troubles and Kat helps them out. Then Kat confides in Alice that Howard is physically abusive to her, in addition to the emotional abuse that Alice has witnessed. As the police investigation proceeds, it is clear that Alice doesn't know everything about her best friend Kat. The suspense builds quickly as the police decide that Alice knows more than she has told them, and she has to use her wits to figure what happened before it's too late for her. Best Friends Forever is a terrific suspense novel, one that fans of Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies will really enjoy. Like Moriarty, Hunt punctuates the day-to-day domestic life with a puzzle of a mystery to be solved. Also like Moriarty, Hunt sprinkles in a few clues that clever readers may be able to pick up on that help solve the mystery, and even though I thought I knew where it was going, the ending still caused me to gasp out loud. Suspense lovers should put Best Friends Forever on their TBR list, maybe for a long airplane trip. It will make the time fly by. (Just be careful who you talk to at the airport.)
Favorite Quotes: Kat wasn’t just wealthy. She came from capital-M Money. She never eats. She lives on a diet of wine and bitterness… No one liked Howard… Not to speak ill of the dead, but he was an @hole. If everyone who thought he was an @hole was a suspect, they’d have an overly large number of people to consider. If insanity was a side effect of Botox, every Floridian over the age of forty would be nuts. My Review: I was captivated by this gripping story and was totally unprepared for the chilling and gasp-worthy ending. The writing was superb and cunningly clever - quickly setting an intense and thrumming sense of intrigue while constantly pricking at my curiosity and luring me in with enticing characters, expert storytelling, and a perplexing mystery. I was beguiled yet not fully trusting of the lovely and vivacious Kat. The storyline was brilliantly crafted and sharply honed and kept me riveted to my Kindle through all the twists and turns. I had speculated and cast out various theories but would never have anticipated or come close to Ms. Hunt’s ingenious plotting. She has mad skills and my utmost respect, although she also scares me a little…

I could not put this book down. It was so well written. This book just grabs you right from page one. I was hooked until the very end. And wow, I did not see that ending coming at all. I highly recommend reading this book!!
This is a page-turning suspense novel about the deep relationships women can form. Kat and Alice are recent friends. They've only known each other for 3 years, yet they are closer than any sisters could be. They say opposites attract and that is very true in this case. Kat is wealthy, very wealthy. She has one daughter in college and she's married to a man she doesn't love. Alice is not rich .. actually she and her husband are having financial difficulties which is putting a heavy strain on their marriage. They have 2 kids in private school. The fun times that the women have enjoyed come to an end when Kat's husband is found dead. Since he had been drinking heavily before falling off the balcony, it is assumed to be an accident. But then the police come knocking on Alice's door. The story is told by Alice and as her friendship begins with Kat, she has questions, and sometimes Kat makes her feel a little uncomfortable .. but usually a bottle or two of wine shared make those feelings go away. They share their stories ... but one of them is a master manipulator, and most likely a sociopath. This well-written psychological thriller kept me enthralled through the entire book. Can you spot a manipulator? Is there more to the story than is being told? There are some surprising twists and an ending that left me totally shocked. Many thanks to the author / HQ Digital / Netgalley / Edelweiss / MIRA for this most riveting book. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Gripping Thriller set in Florida A thriller with lots of twists and turns, centring on the friendship of two women. Alice meets Kat at an airport, discovers they live close to each other and a friendship develops. Alice has financial problems, Kat has husband problems, and they become close as they confide their concerns to each other. Then Kat's husband unexpected dies, and the police arrive at Alice's door. The novel has a somewhat slow start as the women's friendship develops, but after the death of Kat's husband this suddenly turns into a riveting read. The story is told by Alice, and moves between the present and 3 years ago when they met. I was gripped by what would happen next, surprised by the twists, and completely involved in the story. A 4* rating from me as the first third was a slow start - though in retrospect I can see that it added to the story as a whole. Towards the end there was a part that I found somewhat unbelievable, but that's probably a personal thing. Apart from that, after I'd completed the first 1/3rd of the book I was freeing up time to get back to reading. I read an Advanced Reader's Copy, so this review is written on the assumption that the final version will have had some editing issues resolved.
