Bought this for my husband who was recently diagnosed with diabetes and he has raved about this book. It has answered most of his questions as well as given him information which his doctor did not even know. He bought a copy for his doctor who admits it has been very helpful and informative.

I bought this book entirely on the recommendation of Dr. Oz's show about the silent epidemic. It contains a lot of information that people with diabetes and pre-diabetes need to know. Any question you have, you can probably find answers here, from signs, prognosis, medication, case studies, exercise and eating recommendations. I would have preferred more summaries at the beginning of chapters so that you don't have to read the entire chapter to see all the important points. It's a dense read, about what you would expect from a doctor, nutritionist, and whatever Bob Greene is. I'm a voracious reader but I haven't gotten through this yet. There are charts in the back that would be helpful for tracking blood sugar, and for exercise routines. Be prepared for a lot of rules, but then, if you are taking control of your health, then you need to know the rules.

I am on the first phase and am seeing results. I like Bob Greene's approach. I don't have to weigh myself for a month. In phase 1 you work on limiting carbohydrates to a healthy level while increasing physical activity. This helps to control blood sugar and raise your metabolism. I like that there is a paid website that helps me count my carbs as well as fats protiens fiber and other nutrients. There are experts to answer your questions. The book will work alone, but I need the website for extra support. I know that the new lifestyle is working because I am losing inches. The website also has a thriving community of boards that allow you to interact with other people on the plan for additional support. I wholeheartly reccomend this book. My numbers are down and he actually inspired me to start excercising again. I don't use the menu plans but they might be useful to some people. The website suggests a meal plan but you can change that to fit your own needs. I like it that the book starts off with a phase 1 that is less restrictive than other diets. It gives me time to see some results and be encouraged.

With a diabetic diagnosis six months ago I have been reading many books and websites on the subject. This book answered some of my questions --- thus I learned something new. The information is motivational and appears to following the present recommended treatments of diabetes. I like autonomy and have been extremely successful with my own diet and exercise program so I found the menus and recipes lacking. I was disappointed that artificial foods (Benefiber, Smart Balance, liquid eggs) are in many recipes. I have tried tofu in several recipes and find it only good for the garbage yet enjoy edemane. "I am tired of "healthy" cookbooks making me feel guilty for not using tofu.

As a diabetic, I read many diabetes books. I like Bob Greene and thinks he knows alot, but as with the other review here which I did not read when I bought the book I was disappointed with artificial foods (Smart Balance, liquid eggs in many recipes). I can tell the good advice from bad advice as I read many books. I can benefit somewhat fom this book, but I do think there are a clear cut and better book for diabetics out there.

I find that this book is very informative. It's easy to understand. I will highly recommend this one to all my friends and family. It would also be effective for people who have friends with the illness. That's why I purchased it. I have family with the illness and wanted the info.
