Overview

Best of D&D Studios, Vol. 1

Any collection that calls itself Real Hip-Hop: Best of D & D, Vol. 1 has a very clear idea about what is and what isn't real hip-hop -- or at least one hopes that they do. And this 16-track disc does have a fairly clear focus. Basically, this collection maintains that real hip-hop is from the East Coast, performed by artists as diverse as Nas, Jeru the Dmaja, Smif-N-Wessun, Blahzay Blahzay, the Notorious BIG, the Lost Boyz, Gangstarr, Jay-Z, and KRS-One. Which means real hip-hop has a bit of gangsta in it, but no G-funk, and it's lyrically heavy. Even if you disagree with this theory, it's still hard to deny that this isn't a bad listen at all. Definitive, no, but it is arguably real hip-hop and all the better for it.

This is one of the best mix tapes from the early to mid '90's timeframe. It touches you with my favorite beat of all time (Jeru's Come Clean,) some Showbiz & AG, and what's a mix tape without some biggie. This is the second copy that I am purchasing. It's no wonder this CD is missing.
