Overview

With the unexpected popularity of big-money contenders such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, game shows have become television's hot ticket once again. For those who are still nostalgic for the mini-genre's golden age, the Game Show Network has probably only whet your appetite for a compilation album like TV Quiz & Game Show Themes. This collection features the original theme songs to TV game shows debuting between 1950 and 1990. Included here are original versions of the themes from classic shows such as Beat the Clock (Harry Geller's "Subway Polka"), The Price Is Right (its first theme was a song borrowed from a Broadway play), What's My Line?, The Match Game, The Hollywood Squares (its theme was named for the show's producers), The Joker's Wild, Monopoly, Wheel of Fortune (included here is Alan Thicke's original theme), Break the Bank, The Gong Show, and The $10,000 Pyramid (the original 1970s theme song, Ken Aldin's "Tunin' Up," is included here). TV addicts with a competitive streak are going to love this one -- we'd bet the bank on it.

The much anticipated follow-up to Classic TV Game Show Themes was well worth the wait. From the original theme to Wheel of Fortune to the rarely heard Monopoly to The $10,000 Pyramid (which is worth the cost of the CD, IMO) to Rock and Roll Jeopardy!, this is a CD every game show fan should own. 5 stars is an understatement. This CD deserves 8 stars.

This CD indeed hits the jackpot with the original recordings of many of the most familiar themes from classic television game shows, primarily of 1960s/early '70s vintage. But be forwarned: Two of the tracks contained on this title suffer from significant audible distortion, plaguing the mid-section of the Password theme and the entire Hollywood Squares number with extraneous, muddy noise artifacts. However, since this CD is the sole commercial release on which these themes can be found, it is, for those who've long sought these musical treasures of an era gone by, the (ahem) only game in town.
