In America today we hear about all kinds of abuse of children. It seems to be epidemic. We have to wonder:What hope can we have for the future of these children and our society? The book BETRAYAL AND ESCAPE is a book that tells the story of emotional and physical abuse. This is the story of Dr. John Hall. Although painful to read, the book gives us hope. We realize by God's grace there is the possibility that children, even abused children, can become productive citizens, can become successful, can rise above circumstance, above pain and emotional scars. Dr. John Hall is an example of one who was able to transcend the painful past. This book offers hope for the future and demonstrates God's amazing grace.

This book is a sleeping giant. It is so profound. Like Thoreau said,'Its not what lies before you or behind you but what lies within you that is important. As the author was enduring all the horrific events in his life, he always possessed a positive spirit and never gave up, no matter what obstacle was placed before him. It is truly an inspiring story that almost everyone can relate to for we all have had to deal with adversity of one kind or another. Reading this book was a healing experience for me. I encourage everyone to read it. It would also make a very interesting movie about child abuse, religious cults, and extreme control of others, bordering on the demonic. But most improtant of all, it is a story about hope shining out from the darkness of pain and suffering, both physical and emotional. The message it left me with is that no matter what we have to endure, we can survive and become loving positive people as well.

For those readers who struggle with abuse, this book will bring hope. For those readers who are counselors, it's inspirational. Church leaders, ministers and youth directors can be enlightened to what may be going on in their parishes. I highly recommend this book to all age groups. It is a book you will not be able to lay aside until you have read it to its conclusion.

Riveting and spellbinding is the only way I can describe Dr. Halls book. I applaud his honesty and courage in revealing the horible things that happened to him and other family members. UNBELIEVEABLE! Upon meeting Dr. Hall at a book signing, my mother and I were consoled by meeting someone else that had suffered in the 'name of God and religion.' He also confirmed that Brandon gross (pages70-71) was indeed my father. My Dad was convinced by the church (known as the Roberts Church in the book) he had to leave my Mother and me. After Dad's encounter with this church, he spent many years in various mental institutes for the duration of his life. AT LAST, for the first time in over 40 years the truth is out, and we 'THANK' John for being brave and strong enough to write ' Betrayal and Escape.' It is a definite must-read.

A child of any age wants but one thing - LOVE. It takes a lot of courage to reveal a life so filled with hurt, pain and emotional suffering. Hopefully, those in similiar relationships will find a way to break away from such powerful individuals. My hope is that everyone in a situation such as the one described here would open their eyes by reading this book.

A true but unbelievable account of the struggles of two young boys who were adopted by their paternal aunt. She provided the material things for them but not the love and nuture they needed to develop emotionally. Instead she abused them physically and most of all emotionally. Virtually all the abuse was perpetrated in the name of God and religion. This story tells how they survived these abuses, rising above them, and in the end making something of themselves. That which could have was not allowed to destroy them. It is truly a fascinating account which grips the reader from the very beginning and holds their attention until the very last page.
