Better Stop, Look and Listen: Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight

Among country duos of the '50s, George McCormick and Earl Aycock were among the best even if they were not necessarily among the best known. McCormick wound up with a notable career, cutting several singles on his own and leading Porter Wagoner's Wagonmasters with Aycock pursuing a career as a DJ, but for a brief moment they had six 78-rpm singles that caught the attention of Hank Williams, whose band backed the duo on several sessions. Bear Family's 2011 release Better Stop, Look and Listen -- released as part of their ongoing Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight series -- gathers both sides of those six singles and adds six other singles by McCormick, each capturing the duo pushing the traditional into the modern. Certainly, Hank hangs over these singles, particularly McCormick's early solo sides, which are quite good straight-ahead country. Once he joins up with Aycock, the beat gets looser and the performances livelier, straddling the line between country boogie and the nascent rockabilly. Eventually, the prominent fiddle fades -- somewhere around 1956, after rock & roll shook things up -- and George & Earl stake their claim as rockabilly cats, cutting the nervy "Don't, Don't, Don't," the assuredly swinging "The Blues Moved in This Morning," and the breakneck "Better Stop, Look and Listen" that lends this compilation its title. The best thing about the disc is hearing the progression from honky tonk in the Hank tradition to the snap of rock & roll, hearing how George & Earl pushed the boundaries as they got from one end to another. It's a fun history lesson in 29 tracks.
