While I enjoy this series the constant repetition of facts, sometimes more than once, is getting annoying. Not just repetition it seems like the author cuts and pastes whole descriptions from one book to another. As far as this particular entry, I didn't find it as entertaining as the others. Maybe because the main character is yet again struggling between two men and yet again comes close to having sex - with each of them (separately). Those sections are starting to read like softcore porn. Add to that the flagrant, if not breaking of the law, then certainly interfering with an investigation and then acting as if it were perfectly acceptable and you have a book I found less than satisfying.

Great Book! This is a great book; this is the fifth book in the A Devereaux Dime Store Mystery series by Denise Swanson. Devereaux “Dev” Sinclair is the owner of the Five and Dime store in Shadow Bend. Dev is thrilled when a wealthy benefactor offers to reopen the library in town, but is shocked when she finds out that the benefactor is her runaway mother. When her mother’s husband, Jett Benedict is found murdered, it is up to Dev to find out really happened, since her mother is the prime suspect. If you are looking for a great mystery then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Kate has a way of writing endearing characters. She develops them slowly so there is always more to learn. She paints a vivd picture so you can imagine their appearances easily. She puts together a well-thought out mystery with plenty of clues but seldom are you more than a page or two in front of the reveal. The friendships she creates are enduring. In this book we meet her mother and father as they become embroiled in Dev's scheme to keep her father above suspicion. She rounds out Jake even further as a man with a conscience-although she has to put up with his injured ex-wife to learn this. Noah is becoming more and more of a contender for her affections but still no decision. Shadow Bend appears to be in the running for a few more murders before a decision is made. I enjoy this series and the worst I have to say it that now I have to wait for the next installment.

Between a Book and Hard Place by Denise Swanson is the fifth book in A Devereaux's Dime Store Mystery series. Devereaux Sinclair owns Devereaux's Dime Store and Gift Baskets in Shadow Bend, Missouri. Devereaux is getting used to having her father back in her life. Kern Sinclair was recently paroled (even though he was innocent). Things are going well until Devereaux's mother returns to town with her latest husband, Jett Benedict. Jett has offered money (financing for three years) to the town for the library which has been closed (for quite some time). He only asks for access to the libraries archives immediately. The town, of course, agrees. While Jett is busy in the archives, Yvette (Devereaux's mother) is busy flirting with Kern (Devereaux's father). Then Devereaux gets an urgent call to come to the library. Jett Benedict is dead with Kern and Yvette at the scene of the crime. Devereaux quickly comes up with a plan (she does not want her father to violate his parole). Devereaux gathers up her friends and set out to find who wanted Jett dead and why did Jett want access to the towns archives. Devereaux also has her two love interests vying for her attention as well as dealing with Jake's ex-wife, Meg and Noah's crazy mother, Nadine (who swears that aliens are invading the town). Between a Book and Hard Place has interesting characters, a good setting, and an intriguing mystery (involves the Civil War). I am disappointed, though, by the lack of character development (they have not changed much since the first book). I was hoping that the love triangle would be resolved in this book, but it is still alive and strong. This book does contain some humor (it will have you laughing). Unlike other cozy mysteries, this book does contain foul language and some sex related scenes (steaming up the windows of Jake's truck). The mystery was easy to solve (there were not many suspects). I give Between a Book and Hard Place 3.5 out of 5 stars. I hope the next A Devereaux's Dime Store Mystery will have more mystery and less on the love triangle (or maybe it can be resolved). If you have not read the previous book in the series, you will have trouble reading Between a Book and Hard Place (in the beginning). I received a complimentary copy of Between a Book and Hard Place in exchange for an honest review of the novel.

Between A Book And A Hard Place is the fifth book in the A Devereaux's Dime Store Mystery series. An important town meeting is coming up and Boone has finally talked Dev into attending, as there will be an important announcement. Boone's announcement is that the library that has been closed for many years has a benefactor that has agreed to provide the necessary funds to reopen it. The one stipulation is that he will be permitted in the library before it reopens. Dev is shocked to see her mother, who she has seen since she was sixteen, show and also to learn that the benefactor is Jett Benedict, her mother's current husband. Also upsetting to Dev is that her dad seems to be awful chummy with his ex-wife, who divorced him when he was sent to prison. Then Dev gets a call from her dad telling her to drop everything and to come to the library without telling anyone and to be sure that no one sees her. When she arrives there, she finds her mother in tears and her stepfather dead. Dev soon learns that her mother had received a call from her husband asking her to come to the library, but when she got there he was dead. So Dev begins to search for the reason that her father had to have first access to the library and to learn who might have killed. So with the help of Boone, her BFF, Poppy and the two men she is dating, Noah Underwood and Jake Del Vecchio, she sets off to clear her mother and father from any suspicion of being the murderer. Another enjoyable visit to Shadow Bend and its residents. Always interesting to see how Dev deals with dating both Noah and Jake. Will definitely be watching for the next book in this fun series.

Another great installment to the Devereaux’s Dime Store Mystery series! Author Denise Swanson once again pens a mystery that will delight her fans. She knows exactly they want, and she delivers. My favorite part of this series is time spent with Dev in her store. I really enjoy reading about the gift baskets she puts together. Skilled writing, and a love of her craft are very apparent in Ms. Swanson’s books. BETWEEN A BOOK AND A HARD PLACE was a wonderfully paced story with just the right amount of mystery and suspense to keep the reader quickly turning the pages from the beginning, straight through to the exciting reveal. Rather you’re new to this series, or a returning fan, BETWEEN A BOOK AND A HARD PLACE will make the mystery reader in you extremely happy. At the back of the book you’ll find a sneak peek of Denise Swanson’s newest Scumble River Mystery, MURDER OF A CRANKY CATNAPPER!
