Between Meals is a rare and bountiful feast in which New Yorker writer and legendary gourmand A. J. Liebling recounts his joyous apprenticeship in the fine art of eating. His initiation begins in 1926, when at the age of twenty-two he journeys to Paris to study for a year at the Sorbonne - and "feeding" soon becomes one of his major subjects. He writes with awe and a touch of envy of his mentor Yves Mirande, "one of the last of the great around-the-clock gastronomes of France," who would polish off a six-course lunch complete with a good bottle of Bordeaux and one of Champagne - and then begin to contemplate dinner over a glass of Armagnac. Liebling recalls too his own equally rich life between meals with Angele, a young and amorous woman of robust appetites who never resents being though of as enjoyable. "You should not read this deliscious book," said The New York Times Book Review, "if you get guilt feelings about the intake of too much cholesterol, or a jolly untortured sex life, or gaining weight, or any of the other sensory pleasures againts the twentieth-century man oftem seems to struggle."
