A sexy new thriller about love and revenge from the author of the Capital Confessions and International School series…
X lives by three rules: Show no weakness. Trust no one. Don’t get caught. She lives by the rules they gave her.
The Academy—set in London, shrouded in secrecy—it trains spies, computer experts, and assassins. Their mission? Dispensing justice and altering the course of world politics. Or so they think. In a world where secrets are weapons and some kills are impossible to forget, everything X thought she knew about her life is about to change.
They taught her to fight. To blend into the shadows like a ghost, to operate on the fringes of society, to change her identity with ease. They taught her to kill.
She’ll need every skill they taught her, to stay alive.

A different story than what we are used to from Chanel Cleeton but with the same intensity and heart. Between Shadows tells the story of X, and asset or assassin that works for The Academy, a place where people like her are trained since they're children and as they grow up they are given assignments. She lives there with her sister who is in training. And there's also Luke, someone that X never thought she would see again, and someone who once upon a time was her friend. I really liked that the book isn't solely focused on the romance part, sure there's romance, but what's going on behind that seems so much bigger that just a love story. There's lots of action and that made the book go by so fast, but there was a moment in the end where I just wished it would stop for a little bit, for me it felt a little rushed the way it ended. It didn't leave us with cliffhangers or anything like that, and it did have a sort of final feel to it, but again it felt rushed, like everything was falling into place to quickly, the last maybe 30 pages were full of twists and turns and that made my head spin a little bit. I truly enjoyed this book, my only complaint is that I would have like a bit more, maybe another book? Or that's just wishful thinking . . . The characters made it so easy for me to believe their story. Another success for Chanel Cleeton
4.5 Thrilling Stars!! “No one can keep a mask on forever; there are always moments when it slips, moments when the darkness demands its time in the sun.” What a thrilling, exciting ride!! I have to tell you, when I first heard about this book, I was pumped. I could not wait to read it. The synopsis sounded so exciting, I just knew I had to get my hands on this story. And I have to tell you, as soon as I picked up this book, I could not put it down. I was immediately sucked into X’s world. I wanted to know more about it and exactly who the “Academy” was. There was just something about the academy and their agenda that didn’t sit right with me. It had me asking so many questions and wondering who I could trust. I couldn’t wait to see how this story would unfold. I loved everything about this book from start to finish. Between Shadows is fast-paced and entrancing. It has everything you could want in a good read and more. It had everything; from drama to danger, from romance to action, to adventure. I loved trying to solve the mystery of what was going on with the academy and the twists and turns along the way, were definitely exciting! There was certainly never a dull moment. I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. Between Shadows was such an exciting read. Chanel Cleeton continues to blow me away with her writing. This story is so different and so refreshing. She definitely knocked it out of the park with this book. Fans of Chanel Cleeton, you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend checking this book out! *I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*
When the author asked me to review this one, I jumped on it. I'd read another book by Cleeton (Playing with Trouble) and I absolutely adored it. I just knew that I needed to get my hands on this one as well and I couldn't start it quick enough. I've read a couple of books about teen spies and this one was, by far, the best of the lot. I was hooked from the very first page ... the action and intrigue were both amazing and I couldn't get enough. I also enjoyed the characters but I'll get into that later. The only problem is that I was about halfway through the book and I started to realize something ... while I appreciated the action and mystery surrounding the main characters, that's all it was ... appreciation. I found that I wasn't really connecting with anything because it was reading ... flat. With all of the excitement going on in the book, I was expecting something more. I didn't feel any passion within the storyline. That was a bit surprising ... this story is about a girl, fighting to discover who she is and who she was. It should have read brimming with want and unfortunately, it just didn't read that way for me. I did finally get the emotional connection between the characters and the story but it only happened when things got a bit steamy between X and her counterpart. After that, it tapered off again and it was a downward spiral until the end of the book for me. I liked the characters well enough, I found X to be really interesting and during the first half of the book, I was reading so excitedly because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I wish that the connection I had with her in the beginning of the book hadn't vanished so quickly, or at all. After a character fails to interest me, my entire outlook on a book just plummets. Towards the end, I wasn't invested in her story. It didn't matter to me what may have happened in the past or what could happen in the future. It was sad losing that connection between us because the story died for me shortly after. All in all, I was pretty shocked with my feelings towards this novel; this definitely didn't turn out like the other book I've read by this author. While this one didn't blow my skirt up, I haven't lost faith in the Chanel Cleeton I fell into author-love with previously and I know that I'll pick up another book by her in the future. It just probably won't be one about spies. * I received this novel in exchange for an honest review *
She was known as X, and she was the best in The Academy. She didn’t remember anything before coming into The Academy. Her life before then was a constant blur and she wasn’t sure if they were all nightmares or memories. All her life she had lived by their rules. She lost all her emotions the moment they gave her very first assignment. Her life was never the same again. All she cared about now was her sister and finishing each assignment that was assigned to her. Her mission with The Academy was bringing justice and bringing change to the world of politics. Or so they were told. Until the one she thought she killed came back from the dead and told her secrets that rocked her world and everything she believed in. In a world where she should not trust anyone, can she give her trust to the person she once betrayed? Luke was one of the best until X brought him down. He was hurt, he felt betrayed and now he was back and he was seeking revenge. He knew some secrets, some he was willing to share, and some he was keeping it to himself first until it was time. A new mission brought them together, and that old, and what they thought forgotten emotion came to surface, no matter how hard they fought it. And being with Luke, knowing his secrets and remembering some snippets from the past made her question everything she knew about The Academy. But can she trust him? I have read each and every book by Chanel Cleeton and nothing prepared me for this. This was different from her previous work but just as great. This just shows her versatility and creativity as a writer. And I can’t wait for another Assassins novel to read! Between Shadows was dark, thrilling, exciting, action-packed, surprise-filled and fast-paced that will keep your nose in your readers, just like me. This one goes to my favorites as where the rest of her books are. Rating: 5 Stars
