Beyond Belief

Beyond Belief

The actual words of the martyrs—such people as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Oscar Remero—as they faced the ultimate conclusion of their faith. No abstract doctrines, no intellectualizing, just the raw experience of stand face-to-face with their own mortality and with God—meant for a new generation of people wanting to know: Why would people die just because they believed in something?

This book is intended to bring the classic words and stories of the martyrs to a whole new generation. Eighty actual prayers by famous (and not so famous) Christian martyrs are presented, complete with "mini-introductions" to each that frame the context of the martyrs' words. The prayers are the actual words of the great martyrs of the church—prayers they made when the inevitability of dying for their faith was at its most real. These eighty prayers span the denominations and the centuries, showing that faith is real and alive, never flagging even in the face of impossible odds. Here is faith seen as a lived reality—no abstract doctrines, no doctrinal formulations, no intellectualizing. This is the raw faith that the martyrs lived as they stood face-to-face with both their accusers and with God. Included are such Christians as Thomas A. Becket, Sir Thomas More, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Oscar Romero, and dozens of others.
