Beyond Rubber Duckies: Preparing Children for the Voyage of Life
Paperback
Overview
Dr. Judy Ann Mumford has spent years counseling and consoling battle-weary parents. Driven by concern over adolescents' risky and potentially life-altering behaviors, she began an impassioned search for answers to "why smart kids make dumb choices." Based on Mumford's firm conviction that what parents do today has the potential to greatly affect their children tomorrow, this book presents practical guidelines to help parents, as well as others who are concerned for the well-being of children, to intentionally and thoughtfully set a successful life course for themselves and their children. Parents are keenly aware of their challenges, especially as their children enter the pre-teen and teen years. Born out of a great passion for children, Dr. Mumford, in Beyond Rubber Duckies, offers needed support and encouragement. Unlike many parenting "manuals," this book does not present simplistic formulas and solutions. Instead, the author challenges readers to rely on biblically-based principles and sound parenting practices to set and achieve goals that are unique to their own family's values, beliefs, and needs.

About the Author
Judy Ann was born and raised as a "farm girl" amid the corn fields of rural Indiana. As a child, she was taught in word and example the importance of a strong faith in God, high moral values, and close family relationships.
After high school, Judy Ann completed studies in Christian education and married her high school sweetheart. She devoted the next several years to raising two sons and volunteering in various church and community activities related to children and teens. Eventually, her passion for family matters led her back into the world of academia, where she subsequently completed undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees in child-and family-related fields.

What People are Saying About This
Dr. Mumford's book is a must-read for all those trying to figure out life’s most important supervisory job—parenting. Beyond Rubber Duckies is practical, personal, and spiritually helpful, as well as easy and enjoyable to read. -Dr. Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor, Northland: A Church Distributed, Longwood, FL
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of books claiming to give us that "new" magic bullet that will ensure successful parenting, yet checklists and 70s anecdotes no longer cut it for today's society. As culture changes and the homespun stories and gimmicks become less and less effective, Judy Ann Mumford provides grounded research and solid insight for parents. While there is no guarantee for any parent, Beyond Rubber Duckies equips parents to create a relationship and environment in which a child can thrive. Dr. Mumford is a proven leader, and her work will help any family to be stronger. -Chap Clark, PhD, professor of youth, family, and culture, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, CA
Beyond Rubber Duckies addresses one of the most critical issues facing our society: the impact of parenting on our children. This book combines solid research with an important discussion of moral values, to provide guidance for parents experiencing the challenges and rewards of raising children in the 21st century. I highly recommend this book, not only for parents, but also for educators seeking insight into ways to help children make the right choices that will lead to productive and meaningful lives. -Carter D. Ward, PhD, executive director, Missouri School Boards’ Association, Columbia, MO
Dr. Mumford has written a beautiful, readable book filled with significant insights and helpful suggestions for raising children in this turbulent world. She brings together insights from her academic training, her own experience as a mother, and her deep Christian faith to challenge and encourage us as parents. I especially appreciate her emphasis on the “foundational principle” that “the ultimate objective of discipline is self-regulation.” All too often, we see discipline as a means of resolving a crisis or preventing problems for ourselves instead of a means of preparing our children for life. -Earl J. Reeves, PhD, chancellor emeritus, Missouri Valley College, Marshall, MO
Passion, experience, education, and research make Dr. Mumford an ideal resource concerning parenting in the 21st century. Her passion is to see young adults make wise decisions, and she understands that parents must prepare their children at a very young age. Beyond Rubber Duckies will assist parents as they nurture and equip their kids for the turbulent waves of adolescence. Dr. Mumford’s strong spiritual foundation is the anchor that gives authenticity to her writing. -Richard P. Dowdy, PhD, associate dean emeritus of human environmental sciences, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO
Dr. Mumford brings to the parenting task insights and practical instructions that are educationally sound and experientially proven. Written from rich life experiences as a mother, grandmother, friend, and educator, this collaboration of head and heart puts into your hands an effective tool for establishing your children in healthy life patterns for years and, perhaps, even generations to come. You will greatly benefit from this book and want to share its resourceful insights with others. -Rev. Jerry L. Rouse, DMin, Neptune Beach, FL
