If you loved the Chronicles of Narnia and Pilgrim's Progress, you'll probably love this book. Follow Carter and Kat as they battle the Adversary in the Dead Forest and as they come to realize what the most important things in life really are. Timeless messages that everyone today should read and apply. I wouldn't recommend this book to children only as there are quite a few things we adults need to remember and learn as well.

As I began to read Stephen Groll’s book, Beyond the Dead Forest, I didn’t know I was about to enter a fascinating place where strange events, twists and turns would appear along the imaginary journey. Stephen’s excellent imagination certainly kept me on my toes as the layers of mystery began to unfold, revealing a new lesson at every turn. Stephen masterfully created a skillful allegory, entwined with faith that will appeal to tweens, young adults and the young at heart. Superbly done, Stephen. If you have been curious about how the events of life mesh together for our good and the good of others, you will learn how in, Beyond the Dead Forest by Stephen Groll. In this fascinating book, you will discover that all of life’s events, both good and bad, are essential for our growth and the improvement of the world. Stephan takes us on a journey deep into Dead Forest where seemingly all hope for escape is gone, where life lessons are learned the hard way, and where we learn that even in the worst of times, there is hope and help. Young and old alike will be caught up into Kat and Carter’s journey and you will not want to put it down as you learn that values taught and learned in the home and church mold and shape us as we journey through life. It is with great pleasure that I recommend Beyond the Dead Forest to you.

Beyond the Dead Forest is a captivating tale that I would linken somewhat to Oz or A Series of Unfortunate Events. Steven Groll wastes little time sending the reader on a bizarre quest with two young friends, Carter and Kat. His skillful crafting of dialogue carries the story well. And while the entire saga takes place in a realm called the Dead Forest, there are certainly no 'dead spots' for the reader in this book. I loved the characters ? and some of them were wild! They are products of a very creative mind. It is a challenge to capture those images in words so the reader can see vividly into the authors mind and be a part of the unfolding story. Well done! The plot was unpredictable and refreshing, with life lessons throughout. I highly recommend Beyond the Dead Forest to all ages.

Beyond the Dead Forest by Steve Groll draws you in and doesn't let go...Carter and Kat are best friends that know the area in which they live like the back of their hands...that is, until the 'dead forest' appears one day and is unlike anything they've ever seen. On this particular visit, they meet a strange man...and their journey begins. Carter and Kat takes the adventure of their lives that changes everything they've known and has the potential to change their whole lives...and the lives of everyone they come in contact with. Steve does a wonderful job pulling the reader into the story and lets you experience the journey along with Carter and Kat. You catch yourself trying to make decisions right along with them and wondering if you'd be able to make the 'hard' choices that they do...or if you'd take the easy way out. Beyond the Dead Forest is a lesson in faith, love and unselfishness. The Advesary tries to do all he can to mislead the partners, but they have the ultimate champion, the Guardian...but they have to make the choice on who to follow. This is one of the best books I've read that explain things about the bible, choices and faith that is aimed at our youth and is great for adults as well! What does it mean to believe, have faith and to make choices, even hard ones, when you are a Christian. There are always choices, but only the right ones will set you free.

In Beyond the Dead Forest: The Bizarre Adventures of Carter and Kat, Steve Groll has masterfully crafted a story together that will captivate older children, as well as adults. Kat and Carter are confronted with tough choices and decisions as they are thrown from one amazing circumstance to the next, all on their quest to find the "treasure" that Guardian has told them about. All the twists and turns as Carter and Kat make their way through the many places beyond the Dead Forest were well thought out and loaded with principles to live by. Plus each truth learned brings Carter and Kat that much closer to their goal. The truths Kat and Carter discovered through Guardian's gentle prompting are the very truths that are applicable to our lives today and are related in an easy to understand format. For me, I found the People Rule Inn and the story of how Goodman became the lord of the land to be great teaching tools that I look forward to sharing with my kids. I will reread this again and again. ~Kristi Burchfiel, author of Without Regrets: A Study of Ecclesiastes

Beyond the Dead Forest was more than what I expected. Everywhere they turn they seem to run into someone or something that doesn't have kind deeds on its mind. Carter and Kat must pull together in the realm of Dearth to survive the evil Adversary and fulfill a prophecy. They manage to learn lessons that help them to grow and become better people. Fans of C.S. Lewis will enjoy this new book.

Monsters...check. Classic battle of good vs evil...check. Creative way of teaching bible stories...check. It seems like Mr. Groll pretty much covered everything! Beyond the Dead Forest is not your typical young adult novel. Actually, I can't say I've ever read anything like it before. Carter and Kat are two friends who love to go exploring. When they stumble upon a random and mysterious forest that seems to come out of nowhere, the two adventurers are faced with the challenge of a lifetime. Are Carter and Kat strong enough to overcome the obstacles that the Adversary throws at them? Maybe, maybe not...it all depends on whether or not they get some help from the good guys. I think the part I love the most about this book is that the lesson Groll is trying to teach is not blatantly obvious or preachy. As I was reading through the book, I was naming the bible stories that were most likely Groll's inspiration in my head. I think it could be a good way of helping a somewhat reluctant teenager become more interested in brushing up on their bible knowledge. Even if you aren't a religious person, there are valuable lessons that can be learned. If you pick up this book, you will definitely be doing a lot of reflecting on your life.

I felt as if I was experiencing an Indiana Jones movie. The characters step into one impossible adventure after another, solve each one, only to step into another one more dangerous for them and more exciting for the reader. The characters seemingly impossible challenges, vividly and honestly described here, are strangely representative of everyday childhood struggles and hardships. Yet, Steve Groll has the wonderful ability to incorporate positive values & morals in a most entertaining way. I found myself totally engrossed in the book to the very end.
