Originating in the Northern India state of Punjab, bhangra was born as a harvest-time folk dance and dates as far back as the 15th century. Fast-forward to the 1980s, when a bold new generation of South Asian DJs in Britain began to weave music from Indian film tracks and traditional tunes into the plodding, block-rocking beats of the contemporary London club scene -- the results are here on Bhangra Beatz. This homegrown compilation spotlights some of the foremost names in the genre and their inventive incorporation of reggae, rap, and global dance music. Anakhi of the UK boast a gargantuan blend of funky bass, rock guitar riffage, and hip-hop soul-shouts on "Lok Boliyan," while Canada's Jazzy B employs traditional strings and drums for the seductive sway of "Lak De Hulareh." Groovy call-and-response vocals and dulcet flute lines drive Balbir Bittu's infectious anthem of Punjabi pride, "Meri Maa Boli Punjabi." Throw this set on the player for a hot introduction to the scene or to blow up your next basement bhangra party.
