This volume is a companion to Shaheen's Biblical References in Shakespeare's Tragedies (Univ. of Delaware Pr., 1987) and Biblical References in Shakespeare's History Plays (Univ. of Delaware Pr., 1989). It includes the essay ``The English Bible in Shakespeare's Day,'' the complete text of which is found in the first volume. Each chapter provides a detailed and up-to-date essay on the sources of each play, followed by a list of references to the Bible, The Book of Common Prayer, and the Anglican Book of Homilies. Though Shaheen's scheme for determining the relative certainty of these attributions is fragile, his accomplishment remains very impressive and thorough. The previous standards, R. Noble's Shakespeare's Bible Knowledge (1935) and James H. Sims's Dramatic Use of Biblical Allusion in Marlowe and Shakespeare (1960) retain their value, but Shaheen's three-volume set belongs in every library that supports the advanced study of Shakespeare.-- Peter Dollard, Alma Coll.
