Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
This picture book is an adaptation of The Black Stallion for younger readers. Alec Ramsay has loved horses his whole life. As a young boy he is traveling from India back home and sees a beautiful horse being badly mistreated and forced onto the ship. He makes friends with the Black, bringing him treats and treating him gently. When a terrible storm arises, both Alec and the Black are thrown overboard. Holding onto the rope that hangs from the horse's halter, Alec is dragged to safety and onto the sand by the Black. The two live together on the island, working together to find food and create shelter. When some men come to the island, Alec believes they are saved. But the men do not want to take the horse back with them. How can Alec save his friend? The story is told in simple language that will appeal to young readers. Farley's old fashioned illustrations are gentle and demonstrate the strong bond between the boy and his horse.
