Be Gentle When Baby-Naming: (Birth Names Are Nonreturnable)
When it comes to baby-naming, are people:
A. Just wackier these days?
B. More imaginative?
C. Less hamstrung by tradition and convention?
Because I'm a baby-name-book author, people ask me this question all the time. Those who are in the process of thinking up a name experience shock and awe when they hear the amazing names coming down the pike these days. They have never been weirder or wilder. Consider Denim, Sunny-Bebop, Moxie Crimefighter, Strawberry, and Diva-Muffin. Need I say more?
This doesn't mean that "substantial" names have lost their footing entirely. The top names on Social Security Administration lists for recent years still have scads of Michaels, Jakes, Joshuas, Emmas, Christines, and Elizabeths. It's clear that many U.S. parents continue to take the safe route when they're naming their babies.
But we do have a greater number of risk-taking parents, and that's because the name game simply has fewer boundaries today. Parents-to-be are creating names, pulling names from other cultures, and even choosing interesting words to use as names. So, when we're told that a girl's name is Lennox or a boy's name is Lyfe, it doesn't surprise us. Or when movie stars name their kids Pilot Inspektor, Trixiebelle, or Plenty, few of us are blown away by the news.
