Big City

Merle Haggard's BIG CITY, the artist's 47th album but his first for Epic Records, is one of the underappreciated gems in the vast Hag catalog. These are Hag's first in-depth ruminations about the passing of time and the persistence of memory, with a future dimly perceived, unenthusiastically anticipated. His first sung words are "I'm tired of this dirty old city," but he hammers on the words "I'm tired," setting a world-weary tone that's sustained throughout the dozen tracks, even in the up-tempo numbers. The originals and covers here are among the strongest Hag ever put on an album, including the title track and "Are The Good Times Really Over (I Wish A Buck Was Still Silver)." The touching, curiously downbeat love song "My Favorite Memory," will damn sure bring a tear to your eye.
