Chapter OneOne warm summer's day Mama and Bella Bear were getting ready for Papa's birthday dinner. While Chester and Lester played in the yard Mama and Bella cooked, cleaned and decorated the house for the big event. With the table set and the icing on the cake everything was nearly complete.
"I want everything to be just right for Papa's birthday dinner," said Mama.
"The house is spic n' span, Mama, and the food looks scrumptious," said Bella. "Oh, no!" she exclaimed. "We ran out of Papa's favorite tea."
"How in the world could I have forgotten?" Mama sighed.
"You could ask our neighbor, Mrs. Rabbit, Mama," said Bella.
"But what about your brothers?"
"I'm big enough now, I can watch them."
"I don't know, Bella. You're a big girl and a great big sister, but your brothers are a handful. Just look at them out there."
Bella looked out the window where Chester and Lester played a game of tag.
"How hard could it be?" Bella asked herself. "They're always getting into trouble. As long as I watch them and keep them outside, everything will be fine."
"I can handle them, Mama. I will watch them and when you get home, I'll help you get them cleaned up."
"I don't know, Bella," said Mama. "It's a big job."
"Oh please, Mama. I can do it," begged Bella.
"Well, I guess its okay, but you have to watch them closely and make sure they don't dirty the house."
"I promise. Everything will be just as you left it."
As Mama left, Bella made her way into the backyard. She heard Chester and Lester laughing and shouting. They ran in circles, mud covered them from head to toe.
"When Mama comes home, you have to get washed up for Papa's birthday."
"Papa's birthday!" yelled Chester. "Let's get ready now!" said Lester and into the house they ran.
