Katherine and Nina¿s adulterous affair forces each to choose between their current partners or a life together. Katherine, awaiting Nina in a seaside cottage, endlessly writes a journal reflecting upon her entire life and how loving Nina changes everything. Written in chapters alternating between Katherine and Nina, Katherine¿s chapters are long, repetitive, and reflective, endlessly asking herself philosophical questions about her life, love, and society. Her chapters are presented as part of a journal she keeps while awaiting Nina¿s decision about their future together. Nina¿s chapters are shorter and set in the present tense, as she deals with everyday life. Nina¿s character is less developed. Overall, the story is romantic, but at times Katherine¿s portions are too long and reflective.
