The wheelchair-bound Oracle (Barbara Gordon, formerly Batgirl) now fights crime as a superhacker and cyberspy. Her field agent, Dinah Lance, is the Black Canary, a tough martial artist. When a case goes wrong, and a blackmailer called Savant captures the Canary, he threatens to kill her unless Oracle can supply him with a choice piece of information: the secret identity of Batman. Oracle is forced to rely on the Huntress, whom she does not trust, to rescue the Canary and bring Savant to justice. The first two "Birds of Prey" trade paperbacks reprinted stories published in the 1990s, while this third volume skips ahead in the series to 2003. Simone enlivens the story with humorous banter and some nice emotional moments, and in her hands the lead characters are refreshingly imperfect and argumentative. The artwork, penciled by Ed Benes with a manga-esque touch, is generally solid. This above-average superhero book is recommended for larger collections, for teens and adults.
