This was a very fast paced and absorbing novel. I could not put it down until the last page and I loved the old English pirate slang he used. Good book!

This is standard fare for Wilbur Smith, and is the first of three books centered on the family of Frankie Courtney and his son Hal. The others are Monsoon and Blue Horizon. While a rousing good adventure and generally enjoyable, Birds of Prey and its two sequels have nothing in particular to recommend them over the better work of this and other writers. As always the descriptions of Africa, its people and wildlife, and the rhythms of life there, are detailed and compelling. The genuinely new aspect of these is that they take place early in the great Age of Sail, which allows the writer to buckle his swashes and shiver his timbres. One wishes that he had known more about sailing, though, as this aspect of the three novels is almost pathetic compared to the work of Patrick O'Brian. It seems as though he read some of either Hornblower or Aubrey and just borrowed some key terms and general situations. The action is a prequel to the three main books of the Courtney Series, taking place over a century earlier. Fortunately or not it has no real bearing on the rest of the series. So while these three can be read out of sequence without spoiling the other novels, if read in order they shed no light on the next three books. In one respect Birds of Prey is interestingly unusual. The author uses a device similar to that used by Pasternak in Dr. Zhivago, wherein each of the three women loved by a Yuri Zhivago represent a different era in Russian life 'pre-, mid-, and post-revolution'. In this case each of several women loved by a character serve to center one part of his life, drive the action, and get him to the next part. Other reviewers have complained of graphic sex in these novels. This is somewhat inaccurate. While Smith is unashamed of the human body, and graphic in his descriptions of it, the only descriptions of loving are very non-specific. If you would prefer no mention of sexuality then don't read this (or the Bible). Overall, this writer has done much better work. Birds of Prey is not recommended for any but the newest or most indiscriminate of Smith's fans.

Wilbur Smith is at it again! If you like reading adventure stories which include lots of sex and violence, blood and guts, then this is the book for you. Wilbur Smith writes with a smooth uninterrupted flow and his attention for detail never wavers. His descriptions of the seafaring lifestyle of yore leaves very little to the imgagination. This book introduces two more members of the Courtney clan

One of the best books I've ever read. Smith takes you for a ride through time and you feel and dream about the adventures in this book. After reading I wished to see a movie of this kind.

I just finished this book and will rush to my bookstore for the next volumn. This is the third series of Wilbur Smith I have read and I can attest that he continues his mastery of the historical-fiction high-adventure.

Not sure how I can explain how wonderful this book is. It is one of the best if not the best book I have ever read. Its the kind of book that sucks you in and you can not stop until you are done. I was so engrossed in this book I read everywhere in the house in the car at work in the tub even in the check cashing line. It kept me up till 2am until I pulled myself away cause I had to go to sleep and even then sleep would not come cause I couldnt take my mind off the book. Wilbur Smith has an awesome writing style and is truely a wonderful story teller. I will definitly read all of his books and recommend this one to everyone I know!!

Wilbur Smith really comes through with a phenominal book here. The action begins with the opening pages and never stops til the very end. Smith has created a plethora of well-defined, exciting characters in Birds of Prey. From the ones you love to those you love to hate. This book is filled with adventure! Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down. I highly recommend the Courtney series by Wilbur Smith of which Birds of Prey is the first. Every one of these books is a great read, though my personal favorite in the series (and of all Wilbur Smith books I've read so far) is Blue Horizon.

This is one of wilburs best books and should be read but it really should be read in order. His other books in the series are wonderful as well. remember this is the beginning of the Courtneys and is written so masterfully that you will think you are there with them.
