Birth of an Empire: The Beginning by Catrina Taylor, Corrie Barling

Kala, a once timid Xenonian slave girl, possesses a unique psionic signature exploited by the military to create a powerful weapon of war. Climbing to the rank of Fleet Commander, the compassionate Kala stirs controversy when she pushes for peace in the chaos of the great war.

A skilled but reckless soldier from the opposing Dentonian fleet, Yatrell struggles to hone his unique talents. The skills and abilities that help him become the formidable leader are the same that may be the undoing of his entire planet.

Brax left his clan when his psionic ability surfaced. A gentle giant, he has become an exceptional fighter whose only weakness is his desperation for acceptance.

When the three are reunited, they become a dynamic force…and the key to peace.

Finished reading Birth of an Empire ~ by Catrina Taylor OMG, i pressed through a migraine to finish this book, i just had to find out if Yatrell and Kala made up...only to find out it is a series!!!! UGH... :) i cant wait to read the next volume. This book is the first sci-fi book i've read and i was not disappointed. I LOVE it! The mind and heart are some seriously powerful weapons and in this book they are book used as positive and negative forces... a broken heart can be something to stump you or press you on, but when you have 2 hearts and they are both out. Two people who are supposed to be enemies find each other over time and space and build a connection through their minds... one fights for the other and the other is more focused on their missions, and in the end they each deal with the pain of loss in their own ways. I am so a fan now! KieShi

I liked "Birth of an Empire: The Beginning" by Catrina Taylor. The characters are very life like. The plot was a little slow in the beginning but picked up after a little while. Once it picked up it was a really good book. It had many twists and turns that made it that much more interesting. I can't wait to read the other books in this series. I would recommend this book for fans of science fiction books.

This book was difficult to put down. I was drawn into this book like only a few books have. I was there feeling the frustration, waiting for the enemy. I was a little sad when it ended because I didn't  want to stop reading. had to get the second one as quickly as I could.

An interesting spin on the space opera genre. For a first novel of a series it opens the questions of war, romance and the future in new and interesting ways. It definitely leaves the reader wanting more. This book actually reminded me of the beginning of the Honor Harrington series. I expect more good reads in the future.

Though I am not a fan of Sci-Fi, I found myself intrigued with the main characters, Kala and the  somewhat cynic Yatrell. Kala's psyionic abilities and inner strength made her "must be loved"  character. From slave girl just discovering the extent of her power to a powerful military weapon, Kala intrigues the reader. All the while, the twists and turns lure you farther in and keep you wanting more. The worlds in which the book takes place and the technology posed an issue for me. This is in no way a bad thing. As someone who does not read the genre, I was simply muddling through the deeply detailed and vivid descriptions. Once I took the time to really look at what I was reading, everything came together nicely. If you are a Sci-Fi fan, I highly recommend this book. If you are not a fan of the genre but you want to start investigating what it has to offer, I highly recommend this book.

This story is great for mom's who enjoy reading and have no time. It is well thought out and the writing is more mature then most of the books I have picked up. The concept is brilliant. There is a cliff hanger at the end that makes you beg for the next story. If you like anything science fiction this book will keep you in it's pages. I recommend it to anyone who is tired of books for women that are nothing but romance. A strong female cast with a balance of male characters. If you have a high school student, who need to learn about caring for the earth without a lecture,I believe this story may help with that too. It is a series I will be buying as soon as the next books are released.

I love science fiction and it is probably my favorite genre. Catrina Taylor was a new author to me and I was excited to try out Birth of an Empire: The Beginning. Kala's character intrigued me and made me want to read more of the story. Kala has psionic abilities that make her special. I kept reading the book to see how she would use these and how they would come in handy. Kala ends up getting recruited for the military, yet she is still a sweet girl because she does not want to cause harm to anyone even her worst enemies. I thought that the author did a great job with character development and everything in the plot flowed well together. I would recommend this one and I'm hoping that there will be more books in this series!

Really enjoyed the book. Look forward to the continuation of Yatrell's and Kala's story in the next book.

Good story, buuuuuuut it kinda lagged in some places. I was also vastly annoyed that the book was 700+ pages and it ended with a "to be continued in the next book". At first, i found the long distance telepathic relationship interesting, but since it spanned the entire book with only one face to face encounter at the end it became tedious. Great premise, but it left me wanting
