Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Some of the 20 papers from a May 1992 workshop in Penang, Malaysia, identify and examine the risk factors associated with maternal and neonatal mortality, intrauterine growth retardation, and preterm delivery; among them are maternal age, maternal nutritional deficiency, and infections during pregnancy. Other papers suggests ways to reduce the risk: in industrialized countries by intrapartum surveillance technologies; in nonindustrialized countries by such means as training traditional birth attendants, and coordinating community health care with hospitals.
