Dollycas’s Thoughts Linda O. Johnston loves her pets and that truly shines through in her writing. In Bite the Biscuit she introduces us to Carrie Kennersly who has so much energy it is absolutely amazing. She works at a local veterinary clinic as a tech and has just bought a local bakery and added on to include a “barkery” where she bakes and sells yummy treats for dogs. Her own dog, Biscuit, goes almost everywhere with her. She is at her shop by 5 a.m. each morning baking and her day continues on in her store until it is time for her to work at the clinic and then she goes back to close up her shop. She did inherit 2 assistants when she purchased the bakery but she enjoys doing both things and plans to continue that as long as she can. Her grand reopening is all set and people are showing up in droves, including the owners of a local pet supply store, her closest competition. Myra Ethman owns the store with her husband and she doesn’t make a quiet entrance. She is bad mouthing Carrie’s treats to everyone and threatening to put the new barkery out of business. She and Carrie exchange a few heated words but Carrie is not about to let one cranky customer ruin her day. But it does ruin the next day and week when Myra is found dead and the police are trying to find enough evidence to collar Carrie for the crime. So now Carrie’s busy days also have to include time for snooping, sleuthing and solving the mystery of who made Myra Bite the Biscuit . This was a fun story with some very entertaining characters both 2 and 4 legged. We not only meet Carrie and her store clerks, we also meet her brother, Neal, Dr. Arvus Kline, the vet that helped Carrie buy her bakery/barkery, and Dr. Reed Storme and his dog Hugo, plus many more. The mystery was very well written as well. Myra wasn’t the most liked woman around town so there were plenary of suspects. I saw where the story was headed and was still surprised by the way things actually played out in the end. The author also includes some doggy treat recipe in the back of the book too. This is a great start for this new series!

I have read Linda O. Johnston's other series, so I was excited when I heard about BITE THE BISCUIT in her new Barkery & Biscuits Mystery series. I loved it!  This series is off to a wonderful start! Ms. Johnston has written a good solid mystery, with very enjoyable characters. And once again, her love for animals shines through.  I really enjoyed the idea of the profession for the protagonist. Owning her own pet food bakery is so cool. I would be in a place like that all the time for my pup! If you're a fan of Linda O. Johnston's other titles, you are going to love BITE THE BISCUIT as much as I did!

clues, red herrings, and lots of detailed characterization Bite the Biscuit by Linda O. Johnston The First Barkery and Biscuit Mystery Carrie Kennersly loves her job as a veterinary technician in the small town of Knobcone Heights, but when the opportunity presents itself to own her own business, Carrie takes the plunge. While still working part time as a vet tech, she has just taken over her friends bakery and converted it into 2 stores: Icing, a bakery for people, and the Barkery, a bakery for pets! Her grand opening is going well, until Myra Ethman and her husband, owner of the town's pet store, enter spewing venom about Carrie's hand made dog treats and threatening to close her business down. The couple refuse to leave and Carrie finally tells the crowd that she'll find a way to keep Myra quiet! The next morning Carrie awakes to the news of Myra's murder and discovers she's the prime suspect! Linda O. Johnston brings her love of animals to another new series with Bite the Biscuit. I truly enjoyed my time in Knobcone, California. Carrie is a down to earth character who has an adorable dog and two wonderful careers. The author introduces a few romantic possibilities, but Carrie wisely puts those ideas on the back burner as she juggles her new shop and employees, her old job, as well as her friends and family. The focus is more on solving the mystery and any romantic entanglements are secondary. As for the mystery, Linda O. Johnston gives us a victim we dislike and plenty of suspects with motive. Bite the Biscuit gave me clues, red herrings, and lots of detailed characterization which had me puzzling over the suspects. Since the author also had me craving baked goods, I'm pleased to say she also included recipes for both humans and dogs.

Long, drawn out paragraphs that seem irrelevent to story, just filler. Real story should have been a 50 page novella.

4 STARS This is a mystery that keeps you guessing till the revealed. I liked the main character Carrie. Lots of drama. Lots of animals. This is a clean read. Carrie Kennersly is a veterinary technician who is just opening her new business or two actually. She has bought a bakery from her friend and split it into two different business. She makes dogs treat in one half called the barkery. Her grand opening of her two business. Lots of people has come out for it. Myra Ethman owns a pet store and her family owns the resort. Myra is bad mouthing Carries business during the grand opening. The next day she is found dead. Carrie is the main suspect in Myra's death. I did not think the fight was strong enough for her to be the main suspect. I also think the motive of the killer is one people wont be able to figure it out. It also has some recipes included for dog treats. I want to see where the next book in the series goes. I will look forward to reading more from Linda O. Johnson in the future. I was given Bite the Biscuit to read by Net Galley and Midnight Ink in return I agreed to give a honest review and be part of Bite the Biscuit blog tour.

Years and years ago, there was a tv show on that included a bakery that sold pet treats, mainly for dogs.  I can't, for the life of me remember which show it was, but I remember thinking it looked like a lot of fun, being able to cater to the furry population and their owners. So when I saw a cozy mystery set in this very scenario, I just had to give it a try. Carrie Kennersly is the proud new owner of not just one shop, but two. The first is an established bakery called Icing on the Cake, the second is an off shoot of it called the Barkery. A pets only bakery, that is a mirror image of Icing on the Cake, but allows pet owners to bring their pets in for a special treat. As a vet tech and dog lover, Carrie had been experimenting with creating healthy, all natural treats for the animals at the veterinary where she has worked. Now, with the both the financial and moral support of the senior vet, she has turned that hobby into a new career.  But on the day of the grand opening of the shops, Carrie finds out that not everyone is happy about her success.  The wife of the town's Pet Emporium, and the manager of the local resort spends the day bad mouthing both Carrie and her product. When she is found murdered, Carrie is the prime suspect.  To remove herself from the suspect pool, Carrie starts doing some digging of her own. As the first book in the series, there was a lot of information to be disseminated to the reader about both the world and the characters. This was smoothly and skillfully done. Information was presented as needed, so there is still much to learn as we go along.  I was impressed with the honesty and maturity of Carrie. There were several instances where drama could have been manufactured by misunderstandings, but Carrie would pluck up the courage and immediately address them. This kept the attention on the mystery itself. We were introduced to some interesting and varied characters in this first book, including: Carrie's younger brother, the senior vet, the woman who sold the bakery, the owner of a local pet shelter and several potential love interests. And it appears we have only barely scratched their surfaces. This is a promising start to a new series and one that kept me guessing right till the end. I am giving this book 4 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read and review the book.
