Of all the different recordings and performances I've heard of Carmen, this is the best one. Of course, I'm a 22 year old computer nerd who's only been listening to classical (and only classical) for the past four or five years. I'm well versed in the repertoire, but my taste probably isn't as refined as it should be. In any case, I whole-heartedly recommend this album, and hey, for twenty bucks you can't go too far wrong. :)
I would totally agree with Jonathan in his review. I have never had any experience on opera whatsoever until not long ago I got this chance to listen to the live performance by London City Opera. Of course the major reason is that I don't understand the languages, but then this validates the good ol' saying of ''MUSIC/ART IS BEYONG ANY LANGUAGES''! :) Although I am just 20 something, I have been listening to and somewhat ''studying a little'' classic music for some 13 years - mostly solo piano pieces and piano concertos. However, this CD album gives me the pleasure of enjoying the unbeatably and incredibly clear sounds from each and every piece of instruments, which apparently I do not seem to have very often, even though the whole sound effect of the orchestra is a little bit too weak to my taste, but again, that does not necessarily damper my enjoying this album. The performance of each artist is simply wonderful - this would be the first time that I taste the passion from vocal art - especially Carmen's playful voice in ''Je vais danser en votre honneur'' and ''Habahnela'' . Wow, what can I say, you will have to listen to it yourself. Jonathan is totally right: it is absolutely worth its value... BTW, I will soon get the version of Carmen by London Philharmonic Orchestra/Sir Solti, maybe in the future, I will be able to tell something more about this album.
