Black Comet

The violin has never been viewed as the key instrument in a rock band, though the instrument's natural drama and emotional heft make it a natural fit for some bands. And while this often earns such a group the Celtic rock tag -- as with, say, Black 47 or Dexys Midnight Runners -- no such trappings arise for the Bay Area group Heavenly States, who feature a violinist in place of the traditional lead guitar slot. Genevieve Gagon uses her instrument in traditional, as well as innovative, ways on the band's second album, Black Comet; it's their hook, but it's neither a gimmick or the focal point of the band, much like it was for '90s indie-pop band the Dambuilders. The instrument blends nicely with Heavenly States' energetic, scratchy guitars and singer Ted Nesseth's shouty-but-tuneful voice and politically charged lyrics. Black Comet's best songs -- "Elastic Days," "Borderline," and the indie-rock hoedown that is the title track -- are a call to action, be it to the polls or just dancing around your home.
