Scates's poetry is a little bit of a lot of good things - a little conversational, a little deep, a little narrative yet a little experimental. She is a poet who definitely wants to reach out to the reader with skill instead of impress the reader with intellectual fervor. Which is not to say these poems aren't smart - one of the best things about them is the variety of issues they take on... a little personal and a little universal.
