I like Shirleen’s stories. Shirleen gives such vivid descriptions of the land and people I feel as if I am right there with them. I feel like her characters are well developed and real. Shirleen does not have every character be perfect but uses their “flaws” to create unique individuals. I appreciate that Shirleen recognizes that pioneer women were smart ,strong women and the men in her stories value that quality in them. It was a fast read for me and a book I didn’t want to put down until I finished it. I am not a reviewer who retells the story. It irritates me when reviewers do that so that is why I will not do that in this review. I believe that just spoils it for readers. Blaine’s Wager is another historical western romance of the McLaren family and I recommend it and eagerly look forward to the next story in this series. I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Blaine’s Wager is MacLarens of Boundary Mountain Historical Western Romance Book 7 by Shirleen Davies. Don’t let that big series title scare you off if you are new to the series. While many of the family made appearances in the book, it can be read as a stand-alone. I will say the MacLarens are a large family with many friends so it does feel as if you are at a family reunion at few times but that is no matter rather you have read the others or not. Blaine is one of the next generation coming into his own. Like all of the MacLarens men, he is strong, loyal and out of touch with his emotions. This can make his life and one who loves him more difficult. Lia is a brave young woman who has decided to buck the family system. The lack of opportunities, along with the controlling times is a reminder of how far women have come over the years. I appreciated her sense of responsibility almost a much as her cleverness and courage. In all of Shirleen Davies books there is more than one subplot and more than one mystery. Some have resolutions here while the suspense is built in another. Bur rest assure that Blaine and Lia find a happy resolution by the end, with a needful lesson in judgement on the wicked as well as one of forgiveness. What an amazing story. The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the 7th book in the MacLarens of Boundary Mountain series. This is Blaine's story. All Blaine ever wanted was a chance to do something on his own and show his family that they could be proud of him. He lives life in his brothers' shadows. A bright spot in his life is Lia. She works as a server at the diner in town. They became friends after Lia saved Blaine from himself one night. When Blaine's family purchases land a ways away from Convection, they tell him that they want him to go and run the new ranch. Blaine is excited to go. It's a lot of hard work at the new ranch and he misses Lia. But he feels he had nothing to offer her. When she found out that Blaine had left Convection, Lia was heartbroken. She thought of Blaine often. When her past catches up to her she has to make a quick escape. She doesn't know where to go or how to get there. Then she gets an opportunity to go to Settlers Valley, where Blaine is. When she finally makes it to Settlers Valley, she finds herself in a dangerous situation. She is scared and can't see a way out. Blaine shows up and saves her. Will Blaine be able to understand and accept her being there? When Lia faces more danger, can Blaine come to terms with his feelings and help keep her safe? I love the author's writing. She is an automatic buy for me. You don't have to read the other books in the series but I highly recommend that you do because they are just that good.
