Matt Gilliver didn't really enjoy the Christmas. He went through the motions rather than explain why he didn't want to join in. It was always obvious his heart wasn't in it.
Too drunk to resist, he agreed to hold a party at his place, and then needed help to organize it. Hannah Penistone, the woman who helped him, had also helped him through the darkest period of his life - when his wife and children had been killed in an explosion - and she was back again. Back to stay, but what could Matt, with his failing libido offer, in the face of the competition?
His friend Arnie had a young son. Hannah adored children, didn't she? So perhaps that also helped Harry, another widower but with three older children, who wouldn't need such constant attention? Or, what about Brian? Footloose and fancy free, Brian could offer the good things of life. Good things, to which Hannah, a retired Bank Manager, was accustomed.
Matt's second wife, (his ex) had taken half his furniture when she left. The rest had suffered badly in the flood when his bathroom was wrecked. It hadn't yet been replaced. Surveying this small, old, partially furnished house representing the sum total of his achievements to date, depressed Matt even more. No, he had nothing to offer such a high flyer.
But, what about Hannah? What did she want? Her life too, had been blighted by the explosion at Matt's. Perhaps together they could retrieve some of their dreams?
