Every legend begins with a lie.
Laeli Tavens, a thief shaped by the Sky-worshipping mythos of her island, stalks High Lord Lawrence Anderton across the country. She must save her twelve-year-old sister Elaina, whom the obsessive Anderton has kidnapped as bait.
“You need not run and hide, little one.
You need not close your eyes, little one.
You may raise your voice and cry
But you’ll be here— as will I—
Until the day I die, little one.
You know I would not lie, little one.
Let the shadows say goodbye,
Hear my voice, your lullaby,
And be my bit of Sky, little one.”
Elaina copes with brutalities and tortures she cannot understand, while Laeli and her long-time ally Sophia navigate a country of prostitutes and assassins, war brewing around them. Though Laeli clings to a well-crafted denial of her past, she and her conspirators must conquer their secrets before Anderton’s trap ensnares them all.

Well, I most definitely was not expecting for this book to be as unpredictable, well-written, and dark at times, as it turned out to be. Yes, there are nods to Tolkien here; however, there is much that is completely original as well. Ms Landry was able to write a good older YA/adult dark fantasy world her 1st time around, and she did so by juggling 6 POVs! There is obvious talent here. Recommended, but not for the young.
