This is an excellent novel. The most obvious comparison is Larry McMurtry. Shrake is probably a little more philosophical, and maybe this work leans slightly more toward the "literature" section of the bookshelf and less toward the "fiction" section than McMurtry. But it is just as easy a read and just as action-packed, and its depiction of Texas is at least as historically accurate.
