About the Author

Jerry Buchanan grew up in St. Charles, Virginia, where he witnessed firsthand the decline of the coal industry and its impact on the local economy. The stories, struggles, and resilience of his hometown shaped his understanding of Appalachian heritage and the shifting tides of industry.
Now residing in Bargersville, Indiana, Jerry remains deeply connected to his roots, dedicating his work to preserving the history, voices, and legacies of Lee County. Though the 2020 census may show only 72 residents, there are hundreds of former Lee Countians who have moved away but still hold fond memories of their hometown, its landscapes, and the community that shaped them. Through his writing, Jerry explores the untold narratives of coal mining, economic shifts, and the people who built and sustained their communities through hardship and change.
