Even if you haven’t read Lakota Honor, the first book in the trilogy, you can still pick up Blood Curse and enjoy it, because it focuses on a different set of main characters. Pril is a gypsy who lives in Virginia, and who cares for her child – a child who is branded, and possesses strong magic. Others want the child destroyed, but Pril will risk her life to save her. However, saving her might involve more than just risking her own life; she’ll also have to trust Kade Walker. While Kade vows to protect Pril and the child, this goes against his original plan and when he develops feelings for Pril, they’re not entirely welcomed. He has to focus on his task… Although it’s becoming increasingy harder as he can no longer deny the attraction between them. The story was solid and well-researched, and the characters were amazing, in particular Pril. She was strong and capable, and extremely brave. The writing was excellent and immediately, I felt like I was part of the story. Fans of paranormal romance and historical romances will love this book. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Find this review and more at Lusty Penguin Reviews! Blood Curse, the second book in the Branded trilogy by Kat Flannery, is an enthralling historical romance with a compelling mystery and paranormal elements. Flannery draws the reader into her story well-crafted story set in 1723 in Virginia with lush descriptions of the time period. Red-haired gypsy Pril of the Peddlers is blessed with the ability of counting the spells; a gift Pril feels is useless. Pril’s daughter, Tsura, is blessed with more powerful abilities, making her a target of many evil men. Pril is a strong and courageous as she protects her daughter from anyone, family included, who would hurt her, which I just adored. Kade Walker arrives at the Peddlers camp to have his future read by Pril and can’t believe his luck when he discovers that Pril’s daughter is the little girl he is looking for. Although they do not get along at their first meeting, there is a definite attraction between Pril and Kade. When Tsura is kidnapped, Pril doesn’t want to endanger any members of the clan, so she turns to Kade believing he is the only man who can help her. Kade is more than willing to help Pril, so he can take Tsura when she is found. Pril’s drive to find Tsura and her anguish at not knowing if Tsura is hurt emanates from the pages. On the trail of the kidnappers, Kade and Pril find themselves in trouble more than once. These action scenes are exciting, and I really enjoyed Pril’s capable use of the bow. Pril is a wonderfully complex character because on the one hand, she is determined to protect Tsura at all costs while on the other hand, she is afraid to fully explore her spell counting abilities. Those close to her, Tsura and eventually Kade, see more of who Pril is and what she is really capable of than Pril does herself. As Pril and Kade learn more about each other, their attraction simmers just below the surface and ignites with a steamy kiss. I couldn’t help but turn the pages to discover what Pril’s reaction would be when Kade’s true intentions are revealed. Without giving too much away, I was pleased with Pril and Kade’s reconciliation. Flannery does a masterful job of setting up startling plot twists that blindsided me more than once while also setting up the next story in the series. Although I have not read the first book in this series, I didn’t feel lost or confused. I believe that Blood Curse can be read as a stand-alone story. Captivating characters, stunning plot twists, and tense action scenes make Blood Curse impossible to put down. As I enjoyed this book so much, I plan on reading the first book in this series while I anxiously await the conclusion of this trilogy. I received an eBook copy of the book for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.
This was my first book to read about gypsies and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading it. I like how Ms Flannery explained the folklore of the gypsies and I really liked her characters The main character Pril had a sister that was very powerful with gypsy magic and before she was killed she cursed the Monroe family. All of their newborn baby girls would die soon after taking their fist breath. Now the Monroe’s are out for revenge and are killing all the female children of the Peddlers. Pril is raising her sister’s daughter who is branded and know one knows but Pril and she hides her by dressing her like a boy. One of Pril’s brothers despises Pril because he and his wife have had their baby girls killed by the Monroe’s. The Monroe’s have hired a man by the name of Kade to find the gypsy child and kill her, but the Peddler’s catch him and hold him hostage. But something kindles between Pril and Kade a slow growing love. You will have surprising revelations and betrayal. Over all I highly recommend this book it is a good read that keeps you guessing and wondering from beginning to end!
In the 1700's, Pril Peddler is a gypsy living in Virginia. She cares for her dead sister's daughter, a girl reputed to be gifted with the greatest of all clan powers, known as a Chuvani. To lift a blood curse placed by the girl's mother, the formidable Monroe family seeks to kill the child. Pril has powers of her own, but her fear and strong sense of protection of the girl keep her from fully exploring those abilities. Kade Walker also searches for the child, for reasons of his own. His vow to protect Pril and the girl are soon at odds with his original motives, and his growing love for the gypsy woman is an unwanted distraction. Ms. Flannery has crafted a taut story deeply embedded with gypsy lore, along with the fanatical fear of witches that permeated the time period. Pril and Kade's love grows slowly, and surprising betrayals and revelations will keep the pages turning.
