I am a huge fan of this series. The author's characters are interesting and well-developed, as they are in this novel. However, the plot is very thin and boring, and has more dropped threads than an amateur weaver's tablecloth made on a faulty loom. It's a if the author started to go one way, changed her mind, went another, changed her mind again, and so on. Too many false starts and stops to count. Simply put, what little plot there is doesn't hold up to scrutiny. When the killer is revealed, one looks back at the storyline and goes "what?" The killer's motives aren't very convincing, and the reader realizes the murders really don't make much sense. And no police force could possibly be that inept. Anyone with half a brain knows very early on why the DNA of one of the victims is what is later revealed. The mystery is why it takes so long for everyone else to figure it out. The book also lacks that edge that something else dire is about to happen, which usually does in her books, but in this case doesn't. In short, this latest offering is as dull and bland as the gated community in which it is set.

OK -- but not one of her best. This is a bare bones story with little embellishment to make it more interesting.

I agree with "Anonymous" who posted on May 11, 2012. It was the first book I read by this author, an I doubt if I'll bother with another. The characters were well drawn-out, but the plot was ridiculous and really made no sense. It also made no sense how Demarkian solved the mystery almost immediately.

This was another enjoyable book by Jane Haddam. I really enjoyed the mystery as well as the neighborhood connections of Gregor Demarkian.
