FBI Agent Lily Yu and Lupi Prince Rule Turner plan their mixed marriage over the objections of each of their respective families. Her side objects to a werewolf for an in law; while his side opposes a human as an in-law. Neither side will budge a fraction on the upcoming nuptials. In San Diego at a baby shower for FBI Agent Cynna Weaver and Lupine Sorcerer Cullen Seabourne (see Blood Lines and Night Season for their mating) at the Nokolai Clan home, an assassin almost murders Cullen. As Lily investigates, she is shocked when her shapeshifting grandmother vanishes without a trace. Even more stunning to the Fed is all clues in the murder attempt lead to grandmother as an ancient blood enemy plans to kill her and anyone related to her. The key to the latest Yu-Turner urban fantasy is the emphasis is on her enigmatic grandmother, especially the elderly shapeshifter's past. Though newcomers will need a scorecard, Lily fans obtain a terrific whodunit that includes the return of the C couple, but the fun is learning why the avenger is doing it because of the deep look at the Yu family roots. This has become one of my favorite series. I recommend it, as much as anyone can recommend something to a stranger and have them heed the advice of someone they don't know. If you decide to take the word of this stranger and buy this series, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I am entranced with the characters of Lily Yu and Rule Turner. And Grandmother! Don't get me started on why I love the dangerous, inscrutable, and fascinating Grandmother. Lady and tiger, wow! Lily, former police detective and current FBI agent with the magical crimes division, is supposed to be planning her wedding to Lupi prince, poster boy, and public face, Rule Turner but she is dragging her feet and doesn't really know why. She is also involved in a case with a very dangerous magical character that wants to take over San Diego and is spreading fear and illusions throughout the city. We get to revisit other favorite characters in this episode too as Lily plans a baby shower for Cynna and Cullen's baby during which Cullen is stabbed in the heart and prevented from healing by a spell cast by a sorcerer who can make even werewolves see things that aren't there. We learn a lot about Grandmother's past since she fought this evil character before. And we spend time with the dragon known as Sam who is also inscrutable and who is nudging everyone to a gain a result only he can see. I find this combination of werewolves, dragons and magic to be irresistable.

exciting, hard to put down, clever twists while characters try to save the world and solve the mystery; love the character Yu and very strong secondary characters as well.

This series has gotten more interesting the more I've had a chance to sink into the characters and the world. Everything works together really well to be both interesting and somehow familiar. The tone reads a little like an epic fantasy series, with a little more sex.

Lily is struggling to understand her own hesitation to involve herself in planning her own wedding, but disaster-response takes a front seat when an attack at a friend's baby shower leaves the husband-to-be in the hospital with more than physical injuries. An unseasonal heatwave coinciding with a rash of hallucinations has the city reeling, and when the hallucinations get worse and Grandmother Yu disappears, Lily and Rule turn to wise old dragon Sam for assistance. But dragons have agendas of their own, and a centuries old treaty will have Lily facing some hard truths - and a new and deadly threat out of the depths of the past.Too cryptic? Hopefully I managed to avoid any spoilers. This is a wild ride - but start somewhere earlier in the series or a lot of things aren't going to make much sense.

May I just say, I love it when Grandmother is part of the story! In Blood Magic, an enemy of grandmother’s from long ago is looking to get her revenge, which brings up all sorts of things from the past. We learn a little bit more about Grandmother and the dragon, Sam, and we learn something about the nature of Lily’s magic. At the same time, Lily ends up reconnecting with a past lover over the current murder case, which makes Rule feel a little jealous, especially since Lily seems to be uneasy with the idea of marriage. Lily is searching her heart for a reason to marry Rule when she knows it will cause problems for him in the Lupi culture. I absolutely adore the reason she finally settles on, given to her by her mother: “Marriage,” she said firmly, “and especially the ceremony which announces it, the wedding… That is how we say to the world, ‘These two are now a family, and with this joining our families are joined, too. And you had damned well better respect that.’”
