Overview

Blood Mate, a dark fairy tale...

Nicole has been happily married to big shot attorney, Dominic Rose for ten years, but soon after their anniversary he grows cold-as if she doesn't exist. Meanwhile, another man has been pursuing her far too intently for comfort.

August Corinth is a six-hundred-year-old vampire, cursed to kill and suffer the pain of his victims each night until he can find the one woman who can resist his thrall, his blood mate. Once he's found her, there are no lines he won't cross to claim the promised salvation even if it means taking away everything and everyone she loves.

In this story, August is a vampire who must kill to survive and he doesn't like it. He has even tried to kill himself, unsuccessfully, to stop the killing. The only way to stop the killing is to find his blood mate, a woman he cannot enthrall and convenience her to willing give herself to him. The problem is, when he finds her, she is happily married to her soul mate.  August then does some really dumb, human male type things to win over Nichole. August isn't able to enthrall Nichole, but he can enthrall her husband. He forces the husband, Dominic, to no longer love his wife. August is hoping that if Nichole feels neglected, she will give him a chance. After months of neglect, and Nichole still loves her husband, August decides he can't wait any longer. He kidnaps Nichole. This is when things start to turn dark. There is are some scenes where Nichole is put into an insane asylum against her will and it isn't a good experience. If you've ever read a book by Kitty Thomas, you know that she writes some pretty dark books. The stories always have some sort of kidnapping or non-consensual or coercion into sex. This story is no different, but is lighter than most of her stories. It also isn't heavy in detailed sex scenes as some of her previous book. I don't feel that either of these depletes the story in any way.

Blood Mate is the first book that I have read of its kind, but I know that it will not be the last. Kitty Thomas does a great job of setting up the story and introducing the characters. I quickly became invested in their stories. Thomas then quickly turns my emotions against August as he does what he has to do to thwart the curse upon him at the cost of Nicole's HEA with Dominic. Then when I got to the part where Nicole tries to confide in her family about this experience and ends up getting committed, I felt like I was going crazy. It totally messed with my mind! When August finally reappears, only to eventually punish her, I almost couldn't handle it. August brings out a very frustrated side of me. I understand August better by the end of the book, but I still felt very strongly against him and his needs. I very much enjoy books that spark my emotions and Blood Mate definitely did that for me. I felt everything from worry to anger with each turn of the page. Having emotional responses while reading really adds to the vividness of my reading experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more of Kitty Thomas's books in the future.

This wasn't quite your normal Kitty book and yet it was. I think the main difference here was I just didn't like Nicole. Normally the female lead is a likable character that eventually finds herself in a Stockholm Syndrome situation. This time around it wasn't. Her persistent want for her husband I found eventually grating. As well normally the male MC is very dark and sinister. Instead I found myself feeling empathy for August. Cursed to kill, suffer the pain of his victims and he finally finds the one woman who can spare him the pain.  What really drew me in and me riveted was the unique psychological twist Ms. Thomas injected into Blood Mates. The disorientation and confusions were simply FABULOUS!  I won't go into details because frankly it would spoil the book for others. But let me just say, it's very different than her previous titles and that I simple LOVED it. I would like to make one minor suggestion for new Kitty readers. If you're looking to pop you Kitty cherry, read a few of her other titles first, then come back to Blood Mate. That way you can get a sense of contrast between her other works and this book. Anyone who is a Kitty Thomas fan will thoroughly enjoy Blood Mates and I do recommend reading this.

This book is definitely a page turner. Just as the vampire in the book could it enthralled me. However the ending was lacking for me and it lost it's hold over me as a reader when they changed the husband into a vampire.
