Just give me a moment, I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that this is only Lindsay J. Pryor's debut novel. I know she said that she's been writing unprofessionally for years, but still. Wow. First off, I absolutely adore the world she's put into place here. Everything is so well formed with its own history and culture that it really feels like I'm living in Blackthorn whenever I'm reading. Every character has a story to tell (or not to tell if they have anything to say about it, ehem, Kane....), and I love to hear from them all. The things about Blood Shadows that I've appreciated the most so far is how invested the author gets into the little details. She won't just skim over the minor plot points and give a little summary and say that this and this and this happened, but it doesn't really matter too much.... Of course it matters! If it's not important, then it doesn't need to be in there at all! The little details really do count when you throw yourself into a story, and I'm really glad that they're not forgotten here. My favorite parts of the novel come more from Kane's perspective, even though I feel like I probably shouldn't like him so much. He's extremely manipulative, devious, and follows his own agenda at all costs, but he's a very interesting character to follow, so I love him anyway. I tried really hard not to like him so much because he's honestly not that nice of a person, but I couldn't help myself. Ask anyone, I never like the "bad boy" type characters, but Kane got under my skin from the moment he broke into Caitlin's apartment to kidnap her in the middle of the night (see, not nice!) and he's stayed there ever since. The ending, or at least the part leading up to it.... well, I'm not really sure what I think about it. Yeah, I guess I can understand it, but it didn't really feel like the whole epic showdown that was being led up to throughout the whole novel. I don't think anybody even technically died. And yes, I do have to say technically because there were some slightly nontechnical deaths there for a little bit. I loved everything in this book, especially because none of the characters were perfect, but still so amazing in their very own way. ..Taylor

Blood Shadows by Lindsay J. Pryor is a must read! It's the first book in the Blackthorn series. Pryor's writing style flowed smoothly and grabbed my attention immediately. She created a complex dystopian society where third species (vampires and lycans) are discriminated against by humans. They live in their own communities and the borders between communities is guarded by law enforcement. Of course, a special group of law enforcement, called Third Species Control Divisions, was created to oversee the third species crimes. This concept is creative and different from other paranormal books I've read lately.  Throughout the book, I fell in love with the characters, Caitlin and Kane. Caitlin's character began as a strong female character working in a profession where only men are expected to excel. She is driven by her past and her need to know what murdered her parents. Her goal is to capture, Kane. He is a master vampire accused of horrible crimes against humans and other third species. Her interest in Kane is not only job related. She believes he has information about what killed her parents. The relationship between Caitlin and Kane grows in intensity throughout the book. Pryor does an amazing job in showing different levels of emotions in both characters. Both characters developed walls of steel around their hearts to prevent themselves from future heart ache. However, their walls soon start to crumble.  In conclusion, I highly recommend Blood Shadows. As I am finishing writing this review, I keep thinking how Blood Shadows is an excellent example of how human beings fear what they don't understand. However, when you take the time to learn more about each other (like Caitlin and Kane did), you actually find out you are more similar than different.  I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the Blackthorn series, Blood Rose, due to be released in the Spring 2013. I am excited to learn more about Blackthorn, the prophecy, and other vampire and lycan characters. The author provided me with a copy of this book for an honest review.

Blood Shadows is a wonderful start to a new paranormal romance series by Lindsay J. Pryor. Caitlin is an agent with the Vampire Control Unit, and her goal is to capture a master vampire named Kane. Kane has a horrible reputation, and the VSU has been wanting to get their hands on him for a long time. Caitlin has personal plans of her own though. Something is coming after her, and she knows that Kane is the only one who can help her. This book is dark, mysterious, and sexy. Caitlin and Kane are both using each other for their own purposes. Neither of them thought they would fall for each other – especially Kane. He hasn't felt anything but hatred since his sister was brutally murdered several years ago. Caitlin slowly breaks down his walls. There is a ton of sexual tension throughout the book, and the sex scenes are HOT. It's passionate and intense. Weaved around the emotional romance is an amazing plot. It has a complex storyline with twists and turns. You won't be able to put this book down, and you'll be wondering what is going to happen up until the last page. I was sad to see Caitlin and Kane's story end. I'm really looking forward to the next book, Blood Roses – however, it will be based around different characters. I hope it's as good as this one!

Caitlin is a Shadow Reader. She works with a special unit that monitors “third species” beings. She has been after Kane, a master vampire, not only for her job, but for a personal mission. I don’t know what it was, but I had a problem getting into this book. I got about halfway through and just couldn’t finish it. Wasn’t for me. **I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review

Kane Malloy is a powerful, ancient vampire. He’s being sought by the Vampire control Unit for a horrendously long list of crimes against humanity eve though they have no witnesses and no one will testify against him. Caitlin is a member of the VCU and she’s been focussed on capturing Kane ever since she first saw his photograph on the VCU’s most wanted list. Caitlin has a seventh sense, she’s one of the most powerful shadow readers the VCU has ever had. She’s also grown up with a great awareness of the VCU as her father was one of their top operatives until he was mysteriously killed. Exactly seven years later, her Mum was similarly killed. Now it is almost another seven years later and Caitlin believes that whatever killed her parents will have her as their next target - she may only have days left to live and Kane may be the only being able to save her. Meeting proves dangerous for both of them as they are irresistibly attracted to each other but the death of her parents and that of his sister are sinister events from the past that may keep them apart….. Who will survive? This is a great story, well written, fast paced, enthralling and intriguing as historical events are slowly revealed shining a light on deception, double dealers and demonstrating that it isn’t always those you believe to be enemies that you shouldn’t trust - unworthy friends may be even worse! This is the first book in the series and does end appropriately but also whets your appetite for future books - I can’t wait to find out what happens next! Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys paranormal mysteries with plenty of action and bite. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley too, for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Pryor does a fantastic job building up and breaking down the emotions between Kane and Caitlin! This is a not just a simple love story but one that is multifaceted and darn gritty.  Kane's "badness" (not feigned vampire boy badness) but REAL vampire man badness was refreshing to read. I'm ready for more blackthorn.
