This is a raw, gritty, crime fiction. It had everything I look for ... suspense, action, dead bodies, flawed characters. In this instance, Neal Caterski is an ex-cop, now a Private Investigator. A woman he once had an affair with, Donna winters, makes an appearance. Being the wife of a very rich, very influential man she's never been free of his abuse. Her sister wants to hire Caterski to find all his illegal activities. She thinks this is her only way to gain freedom. Before he can even begin an investigation, she is found dead of a gunshot wound .. an apparent suicide. But was it? Or was it her abusive husband? Caterski looks for the truth ... but the truth might kill him. The characters are what drew me in and kept me rapidly turning pages. Caterski is not a young man, but a man filled with guilt, loneliness, despair; he's clinically depressed. His business partner, Alexandria, is fighting her own demons. Married to a man she doesn't love, a recovering alcoholic, also depressed. They seem to bolster each other to get through life day by day. It's a well-written book with a tightly woven plot. This is a short, fast read. My thanks to the author and Word Slinger Publicity who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
