About the Author

JANE STRAUS (1954 - 2011) was an educator and best-selling author with extensive experience teaching English to adult learners. She created The Blue Book because she found no resources that explained English rules "in plain English." Straus also created the popular website GrammarBook.com.

LESTER KAUFMAN is publisher of GrammarBook.com. He married Jane Straus in 1987, eventually retiring from his career in government to help with her website.

TOM STERN is a veteran reporter and columnist. In 2012, his bimonthly newspaper column on English grammar and usage won a first-place award in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest.

I have written professionally under deadline for several decades, and certainly could have used 'The Blue Book on Grammar and Punctuation' years ago (when presumably it was first offered). If only I had only known! I find this manual to be a first-rate, well-structured, intuitive guide for all types of writing assignments that now serves as a quick and handy reference for me (perhaps on more occasions than I'd like to admit) -- as well as providing an apt shelf companion for my older, dog-eared Associated Press style book. Physically publishing the Blue Book a bit larger than a lot of other, smaller manuals was a welcomed touch (literally), since the bigger format provides for easier, faster thumb- thru access also, its less-condensed, more appealing layout works well, and speedily -- especially when stress- inducing deadlines loom only minutes ahead. I'm not sure what the first edition of this worthy book was like, but this 10th edition is a keeper. It was clearly created by, and for, writers of the 21st century and for all us lovers of our ever-evolving English language.

I recommend this book to all immigrants and teachers. It lives to its title - very easy to use by clarifying grammar rules and providing examples - and the quizzes are great.

Excellent support for parents, grandparents and even older siblings who are trying to learn and help younger children learn those overwhelming RULES. Great refresher course and confidence builder for anyone that has felt like they were 'left behind'. Also, helps remove the frustration of trying to understand what the teacher is actually trying to communicate.

If you are looking for a quick reference book to help you with spelling, grammar, punctuation, and more, you might want to look into Jan Straus¿ The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation.I can always learn more when it comes to writing especially after being out of school for a few decades. I need a refresher on the do¿s and don¿ts of grammar. I think I found a good source in Straus¿ Blue Book. She discusses nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, punctuation, numbers, and basic grammar rules such as capitalization. These are not written in a boring manner. In fact, these are formatted on the pages in an easy to read manner and attractive to the eye. What really makes this a great book to use as a reference? It is laid out easy, written in an easy to read way, and has quizzes in the back to help you test your knowledge. This means it is not just great for writers, but for students, GED students, homeschooling students, and the office. You can¿t go wrong with this book. The only thing you have to beware is that this book is not the complete book to have. If you are needing to write in a certain style (for example, Chicago Manual of Style), you need to get that book as a reference as the rules in the Blue Book might not agree with other styles. This is a book for basic writing only. There are exceptions to rules depending on what you are writing for. Be aware of that. Some reviewers have commented on errors in the book. I agree with some of them though the edition I have does not have all of them. Some of the `mistakes¿ are actually disagreements among the educational institutes as to what is acceptable in regard to grammar. Believe it or not, there are many instances in grammar where educators and writers do not agree. This book does not differentiate between those, so some of the `rules¿ I would say are incorrect but they follow the line of thinking that many grammar camps agree with.Despite what you might think, all grammar rules are not written in blood. If you get this book, get others. You should always have many reference books on hand and use them all. In the end, you need to write what your boss or teacher wants.Note: This book was purchased by me with my own funds.

I found this book useful. I am a non-native English speaker, it just felt natural the way things are explained in the book. It corrects common mistakes and helps to write in proper English.

I have purchased this book for my granddaughter who is graduating from 8th grade in June. I felt this book would be of great help to her in her high school years. I have not read the book, but in skimming it, I feel Lindsay will find it very useful in high school
