How Do You Make a Governor?

Start with a campaign heavy on guns and horses. Add some shrewd political maneuvering and old-fashioned grass-roots populism. Then attract national attention by passionately  advocating for coal-to-gas conversion as the solution to America’s energy crisis. It helps if you’re a grandson of homesteaders, and a graduate degree in soil science can’t hurt. Throw in a talent for languages (Arabic, say), and stir well.

From political pundits to party insiders, no one has been able to get a clear handle on the improbable success of Governor Brian Schweitzer—until now.
